Extremely difficult to get any sort of visa for Laos.

It seems that there is now a residency visa available soon. As I understand it you will have to pay $5000, reside in Laos 11 months each year for 5 years to qualify.
I live in Vientiane, coming and going from there on my leave breaks whilst working overseas, so this residency visa precludes me as I need to be working away. If you can start a business then you can get a business visa which allows you multiple entry and long term stay. I have been living in Laos for a long time, am married with family there but I have to come and go on a 30 day single entry visa each and every time.

Perhaps investigate a job there with an NGO or the UN so you can get a work permit.
