Hi Corinne, could you move your cat succesfully to Laos? I would need some information because I also want to bring a cat to Laos. But over the border from Vietnam. Do you have any info if this is possible and/or if I need important papers? Would be very glad for any information if possible quite soon. Thanks a lot

There probably are rules, especially from overseas but I bet they are rarely enforced. Laos is a landlocked country and there is significant wildlife and stock movement over the land borders, both legal and illegal. For example there is extensive movement, I mean by the truckload, of dogs through and to Laosfrom Thailand to Vietnam for the meat trade. Pet shops in Vientiane get most of their stock from Thailand apparently with little effort. Customs are more diligent when bird flu is around. If you do the right thing you will probably find a lot of red tape and delays

I want to escape VN Tet next year, seriously thinking about Laos, but I would like to take my dog with me , ( I don't trust any VN with looking after him while I am away ), how hard would it be , if I paid a local to smuggle him across the river somewhere, ( or can they even be trusted ).??

Haha.... I'm not sure I would trust them with my dog either. (If I had one). If you are travelling by car, I would just take him with me and just say nothing. If by bus, and the driver has no problems just leave it in the bus when you go to the checkout/check in. Have you considered a poet minding service in VN. There is at least one very good company run by a farang in Vientiane. If you cannot find one then maybe start your own.

I'll be going by m/b, dog used to ride on the front, until the little red book came out one day, now he has to ride in a cage on the back. ( front is for helmetless small children only, apparently ). There is a girl called Steph in HCMC, she runs a pet minding business, but I'm in Central VN.
