Is Laos as chaotic as VN has become in the last few years?, I'm looking for somewhere close-by next year, without all the Tet fanaticism.

No doubt the shop owners will be pushing the Xmas agenda as well, ( if they haven't already? ).

It is definitely heading that way. Vientiane is quite busy traffic wise and it is a nightmare to find parking. New construction work all around the city does not help either. Still a nice place to live though. When our kids get older I may move to Pakse in the south where it is quieter.

Thanks Stumpy, I don't think I would want to stay in any city over Tet, What about Attapeu, much closer for me, or is it too Touristy now?

I have spent Tet in Ha Noi and in Hue and they were both very quiet. Everything closes, it is even hard to find somewhere to eat. Transport is awful because everyone wants to travel back to their village. Attapeu is not particularly exciting, try champasack. The guesthouses are cheap along the river and the old temple ruins interesting.

Thanks, sounds like my sort of place, I live near Quang Ngai, the place gets twice as chaotic as usual, ( never ' as normal ', after all this is VN ), I think the road toll has had a good increase, the little man with the white marker has been very busy lately, ( he even circles the pool of blood beside the body silhouette outline on the road ).

Attapeu is a very quiet spot. Was there last year for a few days visiting friends there. There is a reasonable Vietnamese population there but I cannot see it getting as hectic as Vietnam does.
