Laos is not an easy country to settle into visa wise. Unless you start a business which then entitles you to a multiple entry visa, you can only get a 30 day single entry tourist visa which can be renewed twice when in country. No such thing as retirement visa. A Google search will give you visa info.

I have a Lao wife and 3 children, been coming from there for many many years, and I have to come and go on a tourist visa. If I could find work there then I can get a visa which allows me to stay as long as I am employed.

I would suggest you look at Cambodia which is the easiest country to get into and stay.

Hi Stumpy, Didn't you quote once, that you have to have a job to buy a car/bike, or even get a drivers licence as well?
Vietnam sounds like a breeze compared to Laos, crazy , the $'s they are missing out on????? But at least it keeps the Muslims out?

They would probably prefer Muslims to racists!

More fools they are then, and Islam isn't a race, it's an archaic " religion ", Anyone who isn't Muslim and accepts them into their community now, will only have themselves to blame when their grandkids, etc, suffer in the future, time to WAKE UP. Look at the news tonight, 3 separate attacks, in 3 different countries.

Drivers licence laws have changed now. Yes you had to have a job and a visa before but now to line up with ASEAN you can get a Lao licence with an overseas licence. Just change over.

No problems buying a bike or car either.

Hi Alec
I am of a similar vintage, and have lived in Laos for the last eight years.
First I would spend time here during different times of the year to make sure you can cope with the weather.
Next I would make sure you have an income stream as work is almost impossible, unless you create it.
Living with a Laos woman is illegal, and the marriage processes if you go that route, is over a grand and takes a year. Business 1 year visas are available for around US$450 per anum.

Does anyone have any suggestion on companies in Laos (Vientiane based) that can assist me in obtaining a business visa? Thanks in advance.

AlecD can you explain to me how being against an evil philosophy such as Islam is racist. There are white, black, Asian, Arab, and Persian Muslims. Every race is involved. Islam has committed 30,000 terrorist attacks since 9/11 and the religion was founded on violence and military conquest. If you point out this facts you are racist. Why is it that we have no problems with Hindus, Buddists, Christians, Jews, Seiks, but because Muslims commit acts of genocide it is racist. Please enlighten me.

In asking for enlightenment, here is my response to you about your comment. Racist or "racism" is not about religious beliefs, it is being grossly misused in many cases. Racism come from the word race. here's the definition of race:

a group of people of common ancestry, distinguished from others by physical characteristics, such as hair type, colour of eyes and skin, stature, etc. Principal races are Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid

it says nothing about religious beliefs.

muslim, like christians and alike describes what particular belief that person or groups follow and believe. for muslims, they believe in the religion of islam, which is the 2nd largest religious belief ideology in the world today. MSM and Govts alike have been distorting truths allowing people in general to form negative prejudices and misnomers for a variety of reasons. from my research, it boils down to maintaining power and control over the global population of the world by creating chaos and divisions amongst ourselves as one race, the human race, mankind itself. why? very simple, to keep themselves above others an gain support of the mass population to keep them in power and control. if you research history of any country in the world, it's been one power regime over another, royalty stems from keeping their descendants in power and control. religion is a method to keep people in control as well. ask yourself this question: if i attained a position of power over a large group of people, how would i maintain such power since biologically speaking, i'm no different than them? must i create a belief in them that makes them think i am superior to them? must i create a system that will keep me in power and protect me from harm? if you take time to research peaceful type societies, you will see and understand why they in in peaceful co-existence. There is a big difference between "leadership" vs "royalty" in maintaining a society for peaceful co-existence. being a good leader doesn't make you 'better' than others, rather, it puts one in a highly responsible position for insuring the well being of others....that's what governments are suppose to do for the people they govern. the people, groups in power, they know this already.....when i was in management, there was a method of management called "managing thru chaos", what that did is avoid fingers being pointed to the ones who caused it for their self interest to rise in power of the company....learned it, saw it in action and did it myself and it works!! however to "win" there must be "losers" which is why i didn't pursue it and not to cause anymore damages. but it did help me get rid of some bad apples in the company. if a growing population of people begin to believe that they have the same rights as those in power, what do you think will happen to those in power? do you think that the way things are that they will simply say OK, you got me and give it up? if you follow the american presidential election this year, it's not about trump vs clinton, it's about the american people vs the govt and elites controlling it. americans have finally opened their eyes to what has been going on and hopefully it won't be too late for the american people to take back what is rightfully theirs, individual sovereignty as proclaimed in the constitution and bill of rights which by the way took 15 years to get after the american revolution but even after winning the war against the british, americans were still being persecuted that caused an uprising to enact the bill of rights. these are factual data...do the research if you don't believe me. so the more negative prejudices that one builds up, the happier the people in power are because they keep the line of division and safety from the mass population and looked upon by all as being one of the 'good guys'. that the big scam that has been going on for centuries and will continue for a long time until they get busted. so your anger and frustration is well warranted but directed at the wrong people who are really responsible for what's going on in this world. it's global so it's a collective on their part as well too. they all work together behind close doors. "the world is the stage and they are the actors and we are the audience cheering them on" i hope this gives you some 'enlightenment" it did for me after 10 yrs of researching. what's going on in america right now is a good example how weak the elites are, they are in fear of getting exposed and doing everything they can to hold on to what they have as well as continue to proceed with their plans whatever they may be. what trump is doing is waking up america to what's really going on and it's gaining tremendous ground and come election day, if they can avoid the fraud and rigging of the elections, its going to show the real numbers....that's why both parties are in fear....most of them belong to the elites...that's how they got in the first place. if you research all the extreme trump bashers, you will find that they have something to lose or be charge with crimes. there's an old saying " when you point a finger at someone, you got 3 pointing back at you" just remember, the more allowing and understanding of others makes and keeps your attitude and emotions more positive, it makes you a happier person. "Don't worry, be happy" it's amazing how powerful that can be for yourself and others close to you.
