Expats in Vilnius?

Hi:

My wife and I are planning to move to Vilnius in the Spring, hopefully in or before March 2008. We have already submitted the necessary paperwork and we are waiting for everything to be processed and hopefully approved.

We are wondering about the expat life in Vilnius. Since we are both foreigners and don't speak Lithuanian, we are wondering if there any events or meetings of foreigners in Vilnius?

Hello, did you find any assistance? Are you still going? I am planning to stay in Vilnius for the summer and started to research for a place to stay, etc.

Sarunas,
Will you be charging her 1 months rent as your commission as all Lithuanian brokers do?
You should get that from the person renting it, and not the renter!
Let me guess... You get a fee from both. JOKER!

Hi mrbreeze,
no i won't. Usually brokers charge 1 month rent from landlord, but not from tenant. If you met opposite, either that was a special case based on mutual agreement, either those guys were looking for easy money...
But you right, i would dream to charge both! :)

Sarunas,
Let's be honest... You know brokers in LT want a fee from the renter %99 of the time. Also, when an expat comes to LT they have to register, how many landlords will let them do that at the property? My wife is Lithuanian, I live here, I know how it works. How many people will let a renter register at the property address? Be honest?

Yes, many brokers try to charge expats for rent. Also many don't... Who counts? But as expat, everybody should be aware that they SHOULDN'T PAY a commission for rent by definition. Nobody argue on that, right?
We do not work with landlords without registration also and we have plenty options to offer.
By the way, it's not that bad in Lithuania as you might think...:) Probably you was just unlucky to meet bad examples only?

I was living and working outside Lithuania for many years. Everybody dreams to cheat you if you are an expat. In all possible matters! And that's how it happens everywhere in the world. So, just be careful and wise...

Are there any associations/groups/clubs where expats can meet? What are other things to do while living there? I was wondering about experiences of mrbreeze in that regard.

Ladelila,
There are missionaries who will devote their life to converting you should you offer them friendship, they still call me. There are embassy staff, who are elite and there are those who come here to hide from something. When you introduce yourself they get a look on their face like a cat that swallowed a canary and look for the nearest door. That's about it. It can be a lonely place.

Ladelila,
As far as thing to do here... it depends. i have a wife and kids and there is not much. Go to the mall. if you do not have a car - gas is almost $8 a gal- you can't do much. If you are young, you can hit the clubs, but they will be dead mon tue wed thur sun. You can walk around old town, but that gets old quick. You can go to a lake, but you need a car, no bathroom, and the further you get from the city the stranger the people become. I do not know what else to tell you. I doubt you will find any expats to hang with. If you are an artist or photographer that would be great for you.

I do have one good thing to say about the people here. The men do not look for trouble and are not looking for a fight even when they drink. They gather in large groups in parking lots drinking and I have walked through the middle of them and never once has anyone ever said a word to me. This being said, I would not live in Old Town.

Mr Breeze,
I think you are being far too harsh on Vilnius, Lithuania and Lithuanian people.I am not saying that I dont agree with some things that you mention but sure you can see the negatives with any city or country.Rather than criticizing every aspect of Lithuania, it would be fairer to give a more balanced view including the positives as well.Aand yes, there are positives with this country and people as well.If your experience has been a bad one granted, but it doesn't necessaril mean that everyone will have the same experience. As for expats meeting regularly, there is a small group of Irish people who meet regularly including the Irish ambassador in Vilnius. And no, the Irish ambassador is not a snob or pretentious in any way

Noel,
What is it exactly I should say about LT to Americans about the place to be fair? Should I say the weather is great? It's not, I have seen the sun a total of 3 hours in the last 5 months! Should I tell people the food is great? It's not, it is greasy fat filled crap that would gag a maggot. Should I tell them about the great health care at hospitals? It is the worst in all of Europe. It's 3rd world. Should I tell them how great the police are here? They don't come when you call them. From a-z this place is bad. Sorry, that is my opinion.

Ladelilla,
Good news! You can have a warm beer with Noel and the Irish Ambassador when you are here.

Noel and MrBreeze, maybe I will get a chance to have a beer with both of you. Perhaps Mrbreeze will disagree, but beer is one of things the country should be proud of. But even if beer ain't it, the wide spectrum of opinion that you both provide must converge somewhere :)... hopefully good.
