Hi SCM, you can see the RE prices at http://www.city24.lt/client/city24client;jsessionid=D615D974DAC32DDA62FAB81F11AE270A?rnd=962237&analytics_search_id=x6834c37409cee020309fdb6370611d8d But keep in mind the rental prices are hot due to deficit of proper appartments (Old city, downtown)

Why is this a stupid question? If anybody considers moving to another country it is usually quite practical to know what the cost of living is.

I own a large traveling circus which visits 34 European cities over the year, and we winter in Vilnius. My low end employees such as the clowns, strong man, and fortune teller I house by the bus station where you can get a 1 room flat for about 500 lt a month. The rent from there depends on how much you want to spend just like every other city. Hope this helps.

How can someone answer your question? How much is a hotel in Boston? Depends on what you want... does it not? The area you mention is by the hospitals. There are old buildings and new ones. What can you afford? You get what you pay for.

Hi noelcor,
Try to browse in www.city24.lt, www.edomus.lt, www.remax.lt. I am sure you can find plenty of choices there. Those websites have EN version.
There is also the RE price analysis for last 12 months in different property segments (including Jeruzale area). Hopefuly somebody can translate it for you. I can say the info here is close to reality...

Sarunas is a real estate broker here on this board to fish for clients. He gives advice then slips his company name in " remax".

What a bunch of BS from Sarunas... His " friend" means his client, he is a broker being sneaky because he thinks Americans are stupid.

Sarunas,
Is that apartment in Jeruzale still available as I might be still interested. Are you on Skype? What is your Skype name that we could talk? Alternatively, what is the best contact number for you? Thanks

I try to avoid handling matters myself in Lithuania because officials and employees do not have the time to waste explaining everything to me and they will respond more honestly to a native, like my wife.
A couple of months ago, Lietuvos Rytas published the results of a little test. The same man got in different parked cabs. He was charged the most when he pretended to be a foreigner who spoke no Lithuanian, was charged less as a foreigner who spoke Lithuanian and got the best price as a native Lithuanian.
The difference between the US and Lithuania is that in the US, everything is big business, which has to protect itself against employee theft. So the rules are pretty tight and enforced. Lithuania is mostly small businesses and the rules are more relaxed all around. So long as the owner gets a share, he is happy.
So I would definitely get a native to go along and handle negotiations, etc anytime you are handling taxes, permits, contracts, etc. You will also find the responses friendlier.
I know sometimes I do not get waited upon until last in shops because the clerk is afraid she is going to spend half an hour trying to figure out what I want and then watch me stalk away empty handed in disgust.
