I am sorry you have had such a bad time. I have lived here for 11 years, married a native Lithuanian woman, have an individual company, helped a friend found his own company a few years ago, have a child in the public school system, and still think this is the best possible country I could live in. I even renounced US citizenship to take Lithuanian citizenship. It was scary at the time but now I am glad I did.

I hope you have better luck in the future wherever you live.

Hi Abakan,

Do you miss your family, friends in US? Have you learned to speak Lithuanian? Are you based out of Vilnius?

Thanks!

Hello Mr.Breeze - I have lived here now for 6 years and I agree with most of what you say. While you can find many places in the US with the same types of problems, living here can be more depressing because of the language barrier and the oppressive beareacray, plus, the value of the US dollar and economy are way down - making it harder to live here. When I first got here, people were very friendly until they realized that I could not make them rich, and that I just wanted to live here with my wife and earn a living. It is hard to make friends with Lithuanians - as they cannot see you as a regular person, and instead see you as someone to take advantage of. To make matters worse, the US has revoked my wifes greencard status because we couldn't afford to travel back and live there for a period every year!

Well of course there's a language barrier. You don't speak Lithuanian. That's the barrier. Not the fact that not all Lithuanians don't speak English. I love it here. Am learning the language and having a wonderful time. Bought a great little flat at a fraction of the cost back in UK, use the unbelievably cheap public transport every day, am getting used to not smiling in shops (it seems to be treated with suspicion!) and just learning to chill and not get worked up at every little set back. I do miss Ikea though, and would kill to get my hands on a Billy Bookcase!

I was looking at the Billy Bookcase on the Internet. What exactly makes it different from the 'sections' (sekcijos) currently available on the Lithuanian market? There are quite a few places around Vilnius that will make such things to order. I just haven't heard of foil. Everything is covered with plastic laminate. They'll even put doors on it if you like. If you want to brighten up a dark corner, use a mirror door; it works wonders.

In answer to 'Do you miss your family, friends in US? Have you learned to speak Lithuanian? Are you based out of Vilnius?', which was probably partially answered elsewhere on the forum: I learned to speak Lithuanian in 10 months, which is not as spectacular as it seems. Just 6 words ('and', 'he' ('she', 'it'), 'to be', 'that' (tas), 'to', and 'that' (kad) comprise 10% of any text, 25 words 20%, 70 words 30%, 168 words 40%, 351 words 50%, 694 words 60%, 1342 words 70%, and 2664 words 80% of any text. So it is not all that difficult to learn the language.

And no, I don't miss the US. Lithuania has been home from the very first first time I set foot on her soil. And yes, I live in Vilnius.

Thanks for the tips on 'sekcijos' - I clearly need to look further afield - most of the stuff I've come across here is either beautiful but expensive Italian or German imports, or hideously ornate Russian manufactured furniture. I obviously need to pluck up the courage to go to some of the smaller independent outlets.
