Hello all rember
I am a new bie here. I am undergoing the process of obtaing the job of Flight Crew Ground Instructor in the National Airline. I am a pilot with over 21 year experience in aviation industry. Besides having over 7000 flight hrs on my credit, I am specialist in traing the Flight Crew. My family includes wife, Son 15(class X), daughter 14 (O lvls) and son 9 (class III)This should give u some idea about my standing and needs. For living, i would like to take a 3 bed house at a good location, own a car, make my children study in an international school, have medical cover in a good hospital...and things like that.
Now, i have to give my employer the expected salary, whereas, i have no idea about cost of living in the capital in particular and Lithuania in general and the average salaries in aviation field.
Can any one in this forum help me find out the answers to my questions. I would be indeed highly gratful to all. Thanx

Hi siddiqinadeem,
Welcome to the exchange.
Interesting question. I know of no one who can directly answer your question in my circle of friends and acquaintances.

As to house listings, by goggling "real estate" + Vilnius, you can get a very long list of Vilnius agents who should speak English since they have an English website. Renting a house may be a problem. Unlike Americans, most people successfully live in flats here. A 3 bedroom home would probably need to be translated as a 5 room flat or house (living room, kitchen, and 3 bedrooms). I have not heard of Soviet flats having 5 roomsso the market is liable to be pretty small. I would also advise looking at security for a house. A flat should have it since it should be new.

There are more schools than just this but this should give you an idea of prices here. http://www.aisv.lt/ (The American International School of Vilnius). I can't say how well these will prepare a pupil for English national exams. They can provide a valid school leaving certificate that can be used for university admissions.

If you are receiving your wages through Lithuania, then your employer should be paying the State Patients Fund (http://www.vlk.lt/vlk/en/?l=welcome) and you and your children will be covered under the Lithuanian health care system (can't say whether your wife will be covered though). Otherwise you will be required to have private health insurance and you can see the prices where you live. I googled "health insurance" + vilnius and got quite a few hits. You might start there if you are looking for local insurance providers.

You should be able to negotiate a company car. Make sure it is included in your employment contract, otherwise the employer can cancel that perk at any time. And check what rules apply to its use. Googling "car sales" + Vilnius seemed to give some good results. My wife took 6 months researching the market before she found a used car she liked. So there are all sorts of options.

I hope this is of some use to you. Feel free to post again if you have further questions.
