I am planning to move to Lithuania from Canada. I am Canadian and looking to get out of the oil industry. I have business plans in Lithuania not to mention I love the country and already speak a decent amount of the language. Could anyone please tell me who to talk to or where to go to find out about how to get my Temp. Res. Permit and how to start a business there? How did you go about these things? I know its alot to ask...but it would be greatly appreciated!!!! Labai Aciu!!

Hi,
Sorry it has taken me so long to answer. A bit busy around here.

As to a residency permit, see http://www.migracija.lt/ for Lithuanian full version and http://www.migracija.lt/index.php?-484440258 for the edited English version.

There are quite a few requirements and it is best to ask in advance if you do not understand something. The officials cut no slack for mistakes and discrepancies.

You can work through the Lithuanian emabssy in Ottowa at http://www.ca.mfa.lt/index.php?199215154. They should be able to issue visas and may also handle residency permits.

Remember that processing your visa is not grounds for staying in the country. It takes 6 months to process a permanent (5 year) residency permit and 3 months for a temporary (1 year) residency permit. If you do not already have a permit to stay in the country that long, you will have to leave while the application is being processed.

As to setting up a company. Trademarks are registered with the patent office. The Patent offfice can be found at http://www.vpb.lt/ (English http://www.vpb.lt/index.php?n=300&l=en).

Companies are registered at the Register of Legal Persons (JURIDINI? ASMEN? REGISTRAS) at http://www.registrucentras.lt/jar/ (English http://www.registrucentras.lt/index_en.php) They have a guide availble in English for people wishing to found any type of company in Lithuania.

Good luck and welcome to Lithuania.
