Hello "Moving to Klaipeda",

Without getting into details, the first thing I would say is "Don't move to Klaipeda". There are litttle or no employment prospects for people here - let alone those who do not speak fluent Lithuanian. This is a very serious warning. Don't move here. Whatever your situation is now - it will probably be worse in Lithuania.

Hi,
Welcome to Lithuania.

I have not found very many English speaking people in Lithuania and the ones here are often not interested in talking much. There is an American in your neck of the woods and I will let him know about your presence.

There is a Scot sometimes here in Vilnius. Whenever I see him, I'll try to remember to mention you.

I hope you can get prearranged employment. It can be pretty tough to get a job here if you do not speak Lithuanian. For one thing, clients are gennerally entitled to be served in Lithuanian, so that already limits your employment range to not working with clients. While banking often does not require contact with the public, you will probably need to read various documents and these will automatically by law be generated in Lithuanian. Your work results would also need to be in Lithuanian. Investments are often made by offices outside Lithuania because Lithuania generates so few investment funds. So I am not sure what service you will be able to provide to Lithuanian banks if you do not read, write, and speak Lithuanian.

Pretty much everyone studies English in school now but the vocabulary levels are often pretty weak, severely limiting the results. Those who studied during the Soviet period rarely studied English and those that did usually found they had to relearn it when they started working with Westerners. So you won't find too many older people who speak English.

Those interested in going West will certainly be friendly. Those who blame the west for their current hardships are likely to be unfriendly or hostile. Almost everyone will be friendy if you learn a little Lithuanian.

Good luck.

Where are you now?

One of my best friends is from Klaipedia. He told me avoid it like the plague.
The country is falling apart at the seams right now. I find the people quite friendly tho and its gorgeous in the summer.

My girlfriend and her family are from Kaunas.
I've been to Kaunas a few times now and I still get a shock when I go there. People are extremely rude and everyone is trying to screw you because they think you're rich.
I was aware to it and they Hertz Kaunas still got me,

I've been to Vilinus twice and both time I quite liked it.
You can speak Russian, Lithuanian and even Polish.
I don't speak Lithuanian, but I speak Russian and Polish so its often a relief to go to Vilnius, as the people in Kaunas tend to frown upon Russian or Polish.

I currently live in Edinburgh, but my girlfriend lives in Klaipeda, there would have to be some life threatning reasons not to come. She has a job that could easily sustain us both no problem, that is not my issue, it is integrating in there, of course i would learn the language.

Thanks for all your comments they are very interesting, i will be there at some point in the not to distant future for living but i intend to visit on Feb 13 for 10 days if anyone wants to meet let me know as my fiance will be working

Well, I live in Vilnius and have no plans to go to Klaipeda soon. If you would like to meet me in Vilnius, I sure I can find time.
Good luck with your trip.

I couldn't say too much about Klaipeda, but I'd outright ignore the previous post. Things will not be as bad in Lithuania as in the UK... just the logistics of transport alone dictate that common sense. The UK is dependent on sea shipping, while so much of Lithuania's goods are done by rail. At the present time, and probably for further in the future than anyone will openly talk about, we will be producing much of our own energy.
There are plenty of english-speaking people here, and you're probably interested because you can see a trail that leads here.
It is often easier to create your own opportumity here than it is to acquire work. Basically, Lithuanians aren't too "up" on dealing with everyone else, so people like myself (probably like you, too) come here and "show them how it's done."

Culture in Lithuania keeps in high level, I can say that Klaipeda keeps even the highest level of nightlife in Lithuania. Just look- kultura , huge variety, and low prices, i am in love with Klaipeda night life.

For me Klaipeda is the best city in the world, I am also considering to move to Klaipeda, just because I have online business and it does not matter where I live, one thing is, it is not very safe, just look to this map- Klaipeda , what do you think, this data is correct or not?
