Retiring in Vilnius

I will be moving to Vilnius from Texas next year and would appreciate y'alls advice. What are the quieter neighborhoods to look for a flat. Can anyone recommend a good realtor. I will be visiting in May and would like to meet with a realtor.
I am studying hard but I'm afraid I'll need somebody who speaks English. I can also get by in German.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I've been living in Lith for a year and have seen no sign of what you would describe as a 'realtor'. There are several agencies advertising apartments, but our experience is that the best deals are found once you have gotten to know the place and the people. Sadly there is a lot of corruption in this country, and many people add to the price of items once they know that the prospective purchaser is non-native. I would suggest renting for a few months until you get to know the city and what is available, also to experience it in the long hot summer as well as the sub-zero winter, when snow can be a serious hazard. Also, not sure what your expectations are, or your experience of this country, but you may find that you change your plans once you have lived here for a few months. Happy to help in any way I can. I have time on my hands and am developing an understanding of this place - but it takes time for anyone not in work who doesn't have the benefit of company support, and the bureaucracy is staggering!

Thank you for responding and for your excellent advice. I'm wondering if you can give me some names of districts or neighborhoods in Vilnius that are safe and quiet or at least the ones to stay away from. I don't have a lot of money, and I realize I'm a bit of a sitting duck. Your post was very helpful. Anything more you can tell me will be golden to me. Thanks again.

Hello Fenton,

First of all I would like to thank you for your great interst in Lithuania! It is a big pleasure! Could i ask why Vilnius is your particular...? I think overall Lithuania can be very exiting place to live although is it far behind comparing to US or UK cities lifestyles. Over here in Vilnius is very quite comparing to noisy and shouty London! But if you're looking for a peace spacious streets not over crowded roads this is a perfect place to be and perhaps to settle down. There are many beautiful private, safe and very quite areas where you can live and enjoy every single moment of this wonderful life...
I am a female born in Lithuania lived half of my life in UK travelled to US and this time of my life my roots brought me back to Vilnius so it looks like I'll be stuck here for a while....

Let me know should you need more advise I am happy to share with my knowledge.

Regards,

Indria

There are plenty of realtors/brokers. The usual popular ones, like remax, oberhaus, etc. all have offices here, and most ads (skelbiu.lt, slelbimai.lt, etc) are all posted by realtors. Everywhere realtors have sign up on every apartment building asking for people to sell.

I don't buy the "corruption" statement above at all in terms of buying a residence... people ask a price, and you make an offer - it's called the marketplace.
Here in Vilnius you'll get by better with english than with german.
To ask for a "safe" district means one with the most recently built, expensive places, or places well off to the woods. Everywhere else is an outright mixup of people, rich, poor, etc. These people have been living in their places for years, or inherit them from family. I wouldn't expect to pay less than $100,000 for a nice two room apartment. More from a real estate investment realtor/broker.

Thank you for replying to my post. This is valuable information. I did find the remax website and several others and am in contact with an agent.

I like the fact that housing is mixed as you say. I also understand that the country is quite safe. I am looking forward to this move and can't wait to get there!

Thanks again,
Kathleen (Fenton)
