1. Marry an intelligent Lithuanian e.g. teacher
2. BE polite, patient and smile always.
3. Speak positively about being in Lithuania.
4. Show empathy
5.Demonstrate that you want to make a positive contribution by living in Lithuania.
6. Bring skills to the country.
7. Do not offer bribes it has stopped being the custom and can get you arrested by the police.
8. Learn the processes before you arrive.

It took me less then 4 hours to get my permission to stay from the police from applying to going back to get my documents. It took one hour to get my municipality registration. I also had no problems buying my house and getting a bank account and then buying an investment apartment for my business.
I bought a car , the dealer had t registered to me in 2 hours !! Its all been easier and quicker than UK where you can bang your head on the fone being put on hold by a jobsworth.
Cone here as a dumb foreigner thinking lithuania is a poor backward uneducated country and they will treat you accordingly. They have a far higher level of success in education than UK

9. Make sure you live in Kaunas or Vilnius. It 'aint the same everywhere.
10. Don't be surprised if the reaction is different if you are NOT married to a Lithuanian, or if you are gay or black or not married but 'living together'.

Hi Nigel,
I'm confused. When you arrived there you had to ask permission to live there? Im a British/European Union Citizen and an currently doing my research and trying to decide between moving to Lithuania, Latvia or Czech Republic. I work from home doing Telesales and my company are happy for me to do this from any where. As I havent met a Lithuanian and I would be considering moving there on my own and without knowing the language... What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Scott

id advise you to read the help page on the british embassy website and also the department of migration. Despite LT being an EU member you do need to get a residency permit. As I live in Taurage county I first went to the local police migration officer to register, they then sent it to Vilnius for me. Then I registered my address with the municipality. The ease or difficulty in getting permission is dependant on the reason you are going to be in Lithuania. How long do you intend to be here as the weather in CZ is better in jan-mar then here where it can be -25. It take a mad man to live here in winter but ive a good house so im ok. I would not choose Latvia as the economy is in very bad shape. People here are very nice I have no problems at all except where I live there is no beef supply and no burgers !!

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your honest advice. If Im honest it was a real eye opener knowing you still have to ask permission to stay in the country and also im put off with the - 25 degrees Jan - March. I have noted your info re Latvia. And I am yet to find a website for accomodation in Riga that is written in English so that is also a major concern. I am just starting my research on Prague and hopefully I will be able to make a decision soon.
Thanks
Scott

nige...i'm not too sure about your points but clearly you had some good luck. smfurgusson seems more realistic. the country is renown for red tape...even with an Lt. Mrs. (who is a teacher and mum is a teacher and grand mum...extra educated) and kids (yeh my kids do my translation for me now ...hmmm..what is my world coming to?? oh dear). bribery still works but true, it's on the less. the country has improved dramtically in the seven years i've been there (35% per annum).
in the netherlands, it works quick too. buying a car in the U.K. is easy too, pay your money, do the log book stuff and off you go. persoally Lt. looks a lot more complicated than anywhere i've lived, checkout the regitra pages...and try registering a right hand drive car there...completely against E.U. directives.
