" We are considering a move to Luxembourg. We have been there on vacations and enjoyed it but would really appreciate info on how ex-pats like it as a place to live. We have 3 young children so would be looking for housing suitable for kids, as well as schools and nursery schools. My preference is to use the local school systems instead of international schools, but I would be interested in anyone''s experiences. As USA citizens, I have heard confusing rumors on the tax situation. Recruiters say the tax rate is very low, but a book we have shows taxes as quite high. I will appreciate responses from anyone to hear about what you like and don''t like about Luxembourg. Thanks! "

" Hi Leslie, I hope this isn''t too late. If things go according to plan I hope to be working in the Duchy soon myself. I had a look at the Finance Ministry site and found lots of useful info, including examples of the tax hit according to family composition. Try http://www.etat.lu/FI/. Its all in French of course, but if you''re intending living there then I don''t suppose that will be a worry. Let me know how you get on. Steve "

" Leslie & Steve, I am in the process of moving to Luxembourg as well and have found a great website - in English - that outlines Luxembourg taxes, http://www.amcham.lu/info/tax.html. In addition, I found this site very useful about living in Luxembourg, http://www.luxembourg.co.uk/living.html. I Hope that you find them useful. Good luck Michael "

Hi all,

Luxembourg is a very small place, growing quickly.

Luxembourg has one of the lowest Tax rates in Europe. It is also a reasonably rich country.

The local school system is mainly taught in Luxemburgish. They learn everything in German at primary school and everything in French at secondary school. What I mean mainly taught is that the teacher speaks luxembourgish to the kids.

Luxembourgian first language is Luxemburgish, 2nd German, 3rd French.

If you intend to stay in Luxembourg, I recommend you to learn the Luxemburgish. And then it is OK to send your kids to local school.

If you intend to only stay for a few years, send your kids to English schools.
English schools can be pricy, but it is worth it. You'll meet other English speakers, and it will be easier for the children to make friends if they speak the same language. Such a move is difficult, no need of more trauma.

I love Luxembourg, it is my home town, it is full of charm and history.

All the best.

Francine
