Hello, I'm Amanda. My husband is considering moving to Luxembourg for work, and is wondering how I feel about this. We currently live in Ireland (he's Irish and I'm from the UK) and we have 3 children (aged 6,6 and 8) and an 8 year old Bassett Hound...
My initial reaction is "Yes, great" - I studied French at college so am pretty OK about that side of things (though German has always been tricky for me), but I need to find out more about how we would move the family.
Specifically - schools - thats my main concern. The dog - a smaller concern, but we love him - am hoping I can get him a doggie passport, but he isn't a great traveller at the best of times. Cost of living Rental in the city - or do most people live outside the city? Social life
Thanks in advance for your help,
xxA

We moved from the UK last year with 2 dogs and 2 cats. You have no problems to import the animals into Lux but you need a passport to bring him back to the UK. If your kids come from a public school or a good States School you will be very disappointed in the Luxembourg School system. They are basically one year behind St. George and ISL. In my opinion St. George is better Primary School. Isl for High School or there is a very good local school who offer the IB program. Lots of people ike the European School.
Luxembourg is in need of a private school and lots of parents sent them to boarding school .
People are very friendly and you will make friends in no time.
Depending from where you come rents are either cheap or expensive for you. WE come from London !
Landlords are however a pain in Lux and the law is favouring the landlord.

Hello, Amanda Please do not come without a job contract. Most of your salary will be spent in your rent if you are planning to live in the city center as every expats do. For a mother of 3 is a little bit harder to have a social life but if you can afford a 10 euros/hour clean lady, fine. Be very concerned about the school: two or three languages and so on!
Welcome and enjoy the beauty of the city!

Hi there and thanks for all the replies - it really helps to know as much as possible. we are pretty early on in the whole interview process, so will wait and see how all that goes. Would really depend on if the job is interesting and a good proposition first. Thanks again Amanda

Hello again, I thought i just replied but my system crashed at the same time, so just in case, thank you for your replies. We are pretty early on in the interview process, so it is great to have this information, and I would certainly not be moving without a contract. We need to make sure that the job is interesting for my husband first, so I will update with heaps more questions soon! Many thanks again (and especially good to hear the dog will be OK - cannot think what to do with a much loved but equally smelly Bassett unless we could take him with us. I don't think his nerves could take quarantine either!
