Hello all
Our family will be moving to Luxembourg in March 2013 from Australia. Can anyone please advise on the following?

1. Areas to live - my wife will be working in Strassen, so suburbs nearby close to shops/parks etc

2. The best place to find rental accomodation. We have looked onlineusing athome.lu but I thought there may be agents that can help us directly?

3. A bank. I know there are hundreds of banks but what does anyone reccomend. We would need a savings account and a credit card attached.

4. Health Insurance - can someone reccomend who to get family health insurance with?

5. A tennis club

6. A running club

7. A gym

Apologies for all the questions. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Lux! I hope I can address a couple of your questions... 1. Where to live? If your wife is working in Strassen, then that would be a great place to start! Strassen and Bertrange are both suburbs of the city where a lot of other expats live. Living in Lux city is also an option as there are convenient buses and her commute would be against traffic. 3. Banking- We found many expats have BGL BNP Paribas or Sparkasse (BCEE). Both have many ATM's, savings accounts and credit cards. Your wife's company may do an automatic deposit to one as well, so she might want to check with them. 5. You can look into Kockelscheuer which has several indoor courts. Hope that helps as a start! Best of luck in your move!

1) Strassen makes the most sense, but anything on the west side of town would work fine. Probably best to not venture too far east your first year.

4) You will get coverage through the state. Then, if you want, you can get supplemental health insurance and supplemental dental insurance through a quasi state agency. I have to do it and haven't figured it out yet, but the rates are not bad. Probably less than 1000 eur/year for a family, but don't quote me on that. And then you should be pretty well insured.

5) Don't know about health clubs. Wife belongs to one, but I don't know the details. She likes it and it is in the gare. There are some excellent swiming pools. Probably as good as you'll find anywhere. Not too crowded, except after school, and some are quite new. One in Haute Ville, another in Bonnevoie, not sure about Strassen. http://vdl.lu/Piscines.html I don't even know whether Strassen is part of the city. I think it is and so it doesn't look like it has a pool.

Hi

I would recommend Strassen, Merl and Bertrange. Everywhere is nice, safe and respectable though. Merl has a great park. Its where all the expats hang with their kids. I love Mamer too out west a bit. Fab park, has more of a village atmosphere.

If youve trawled expat blogs you may have found mine www.abitoflux.com theres lots on there you might find helpful :)

Bank BCEE. They are great, one of the safest banks in the world (i think they're the only European bank which made the top 10). Branches everywhere. Easy to get set up with savings a/c and credit card. Look at the zebra account.

Very easy to get loans and credit here too if needed.

You dont need health insurance unless you want to top up, as pp said, but you'll still be treated in public hospitals etc.. i love the system here, it's fantastic btw! All facilities are equal to and in fact better than the private hospitals ive been in! You have total choice over which family docs and specialists you see at every level. If you have an out of hours emergency that's not serious enough to warrant a&e you go to Maison Medicale near the main station in town. Its all great :)

Not overly sure about the other stuff but Howald has a tennis club (pronounced Hoevald).
