Job offer

Hello everyone, :)

I recently applied for a position in a bank here in Luxembourg. A week after the interview I received a phone call from the bank telling me that they want to make me an offer and the offer will be ready by the end of next week. That week gone and I didn't receive any message from them. I called and they told me that they are still waiting for the last approvals. How long shall I wait?

Can you tell me if anyone had such an experience?

Also, can you tell me how is the procedure here in Luxembourg regarding the background screening?

Thank you

Do you mind sharing which bank it is. I'm curious to know if it is my employer.

To answer your question, this is not that unusual. I would agree that it's not ideal. Good companies often lose good candidates because their hiring process takes too long. But I don't think that this is a bad sign or something very unusual.

If I were you, I would follow it up with another inquiry and make clear that you will have to move on at some point.

Good luck.

Brian

Forgot to answer your question regarding background checks. My employer hired an outside firm to do a background check on me after sending me the offer. The final contract was contingent upon passing the background check. I don't know exactly what they check. But I think that they basically are looking to confirm that you are who you say you are, you did what you say you did (i.e.- jobs held and degrees obtained) and that you don't have any kind of criminal background.

How long did it take in your case to make you the offer?

It was 3 years ago. So I don't remember every detail. But I think once I completed all of the interviews, it took about 2-3 weeks for the offer to get to me. It all depends on whether the right people are all available and the stars are aligned. It could happen in < 1 week or it could take 2 or 3 depending on the situation. Keep in mind that it's August. A lot of people are on vacation in August. And if one of the key approvers is on vacation, it could delay the offer going out.

Best suggestion I can give you is to ask for a status. They would not have told you that an offer was pending unless they wanted to offer you the job.

Good luck.
