If there was one thing that you wish you had known about living in Madagascar before you arrived and started to settle in, what would it be?

We are getting ready to move to Madagascar in a few months from the USA. I would really like to know about Diapers.. I am going to have a 6 month old by the time we get there.. Do they sell diapers or should I bring cloth ones with me?? Also We are working on our French, but how well is English spoken in the larger citys.. like Antananarivo?
Thank you. CORINNE

Hi Cranecorinne,

My husband and I lived in Tana for three years, we left two years ago after the coup. Things have changed little, I've heard, since we left so I'll try to answer some of your questions:
Disposable diapers are available but very expensive.
You will need a decent level of French in most situations, English is not commonly well-known in the capital. If you hire a household assistant who speaks English, that can help; but arranging a household in English will be very difficult without someone you trust to translate.

Hi Corinne, I have a 3 month old and we are in Tana for 4 months. You can easily buy baby bottles, wipes, disposables etc here, but keep in mind, most things are imported, so quite expensive. I did bring modern cloth nappies-but i would only recommend them if you have a washing machine. Very few people have english here-though you will find the odd person. I did bring as many baby things as i could-including a travel cot. You can probably find everything you need here, just be prepared to pay. Good luck! If we're still here when you get here, get in touch. i'd love a mummy friend!

Thank you for your information. We are working in our French!! I am glad to know about the diapers!

When we get there we were looking at renting a small apartment. 1 or 2 bedrooms. do you recommend a realtor?

What do the locals use for diapers? Cloth? With the price of formula, I am guessing breastfeeding is big. How are the schools? Have you been to Le Lac Itasy Centre? http://itasy.freehostia.com/
Its on the West side of Lake Itasy. We were thinking of staying there until we find a small place in Tana.

Thank you very much for your help and information!!

Hi Corrine,

There is both an American School and a Lycee Francais in Tana that my expat colleagues with children said were very good, though perhaps expensive.
As for accommodation, I remember Lac Itosy being a good distance from Tana. Even if you are renting a car, you might want to be more convenient to the city to get an idea of the different neighborhoods, have an opportunity to meet people and just generally find your way around. We stayed in Isoraka when we first arrived, which was fine to start and convenient to restos and shopping.

The laws are very strict here considering the promotion of formulas, because of how expensive they are, and poorer women should not be recommended formula, when breastfeeding is better anyway. I do use formula, which is easily available here-though never as convenient as BF if you can do that. Haven't been to any schools unfortunately. I've just begun looking for expat groups this week.

hi corinne,

my husbands company organised everything. the villa we currently live was found through a flyer in a servo! we live in north talatamave, and our rent if less than half what it was when we lived in an apartment in ivandry (top floor, no lifts, but otherwise lovely). we had a driver who used to find things and take us there. my husband says GUY HOQUET is an agent you can look up -www.guy-hoquet.com/Agences/
but i just checked and their site is in french. My french sux, so i can't help you there unfortunately.

THANK you again

How do you like living in north talatamave? How is th feel of it? Is it more like a big city, like living in Tana? OR a small town feel?
