Moving to MAdagascar

My wife and I may be moving to Madagascar in the coming months and we would like to know what life is like there for a couple of Scottish expats. We currently live in Poland for the last year but prior to that we lived and worked in Dubai and Qatar for the last 15 years. What should we expect, how is cost of living, what do we need to look out for/be careful about and for my wife expecially, what is there for her to do, as she is a holistic therapist by profession and I am a marine engineer. Thanks in advance to all.

Life in general is easy for expats here, very cheap and not that dangerous compared to other african countries. The country isn't that much modernized, its no Dubai for sure, but its still nice. Cost of living is cheap as I said, you need to look out from pickpockets on streets especially at Independence Avenue. As for your wife, I don't know if she can find a job as a therapist here, she has to come and ask.

If you are just checking it out, you can get a 30-day, nonrenewable tourist visa at the airport. If you plan to stay, you may want to consider contacting a Madagascar consulate for a renewable visa. There are different types and you can search for this info online to see for which one(s) you qualify.
Also, you'll need to know some French (I doubt you know any Malagasy).
Don't limit your focus to the capital only. There are coastal cities where there are other expats and industries that might offer both of you opportunities. Consider Tamatave (Toamasina), Diego Suarez (Antsirananana), Mhajunga, and Fort Dauphin, to name a few.
Good luck!

Hello, hope you have arrived, if not, please bare in mind that Madagascar is one of the poorest country in the world and it has NOTHING to do with your high class quality life in Dubai or London.
Nevertheless, the nature is the most beautiful and you can enjoy lot's of things that was lost in developped country: real smile and peacefull way of life. Please contact me if you need to go further so I can help you to expat like I did to others.
