" Hello, It is possible that my husband and I will be moving to KL in Malaysia within the next 2 months. I have heard great things about Malaysia but would just like to confirm a few things. Is it really necessary to always dress conservatively (covering legs and shoulders)?. Will I be treated differently because I am a western female? I have read the Lonely Planet guide, and a few other books that suggest that the answer to my questions are yes, but I wanted to hear it from people who are actually there. Obviously if I am in a Malay home I will have to consider there tradtions and beliefs, but how will they affect everyday life for me? It just seems that there are so many things to remember to not do in Malaysia, is this just true? Any information you could give me would greatly be appreciated. Thanks heaps Carolyn "

" Malaysia is a great place to be and live. No you would not have to make any special adjustments. With regard to clothes, you will have to take into account some local customs. You cannot wear things you would in summer in Europe. Shorts is okay, but advised to keep shoulders covered. The country has great beaches, excellent food, friendly people and quite reasonable in terms of cost of living and shopping. All in all it will def. be an ADVENTURE. Any specific questions, please feel free to email me at sidrpm@hotmail.com Sid "

" Shorts are fine as are sleeveless tops. Just not too short or outrageous. The Malays may be conservative (on the surface) but 30% of citizens are Chinese and 10% Indian and they pretty much wear whatever they feel. Quite amusing really, as you will see a Malay woman covered from head to toe - walking on the street next to a Chinese woman with shorts and strappy top. Study in contrasts. "

" I have to agree with Johann here. I am also a western woman living in KL and I have not experienced any problems with regard to dress-- actually I have had very few problems at all. Depending on what your husband does, wether or not you have children and how adventurous you are you my have very little personal contact with locals. We really enjoy living here and are in no hurry to leave. If you have any more questions you can reach me at skzimmer@maxis.net.my Katie "
