" It appears that my husband has the option of working in KL or JB. He will work long hours, and I don''t think he cares one way or the other. But for me, I''m wondering if there is a big difference. I probably won''t be working, will want to meet people and make some friends, and generally keep busy in any way I can. In these respects, are KL and JB similar? Would you recommend one over the other? Why? Thanks in advance for your help! Jen "

" My experience while in m''sia for a number of years was that KL offered much more than JB. True, JB is located so close to S''pore, however, costs increases if you plan on entertaining yourself in S''pore. My preference has been KL. There are some very nice areas surrounding KL (Damansara, Sungei Buloh, Cheras, etc). Both places will offer you some interesting experiences. "

" Hi Jennifer, As a long time expat in Malaysia [+10 yrs] and having lived in both JB and KL, I think you will find Kuala lumpur the better option. You say your husband will be working long hours, so the needed question, is if you will be accompanying him full time at either location. Both KL and JB offer a lot in the way of food, entertainment and options. KL is cheaper and does not suffer the ""feeding frenzy"" every weekend, with just about every Singaporean possible crossing the causeway, to buy out all the weekend Supermarket supplies! Avoid it like the plague... it''s an experience that is repeated every weekend and never gets any better. A car is an asset, but learn to drive aggressively; it''s a pre-requisite in either city. Malaysian road manners are almost non existent and once across the causeway, Singaporeans adopt the same driving habits, too! On the whole, Malaysia is an extremely friendly country and the people hospitable. As an expat, you will pay more for outside services, so you must learn to examine the prices and bargain hard [but fair]. If you select JB, avoid the causeway to Singapore on weekends; you can be stuck for long periods in traffic jams. Use the alternative Bridge route, even though it is some 30 km further. You will probably arrive in JB / Singapore in far less time than it takes to cross the JB causeway. I agree with Robert, both cities offer variety and should not be missed; explore them both [and other places like Muar and Melaka]. To really experience the warmth of Malaysia, take your time and search out the opportunity to learn and understand the multi-cultural society. You will find whilst predominantly an Islamic Society, the freedom and diversity of other etnic races, e.g. European, Chinese and Indian, are free and unfettered, making this truly a pot pourri of the old and the new. Enjoy your stay. "
