" Hi all. My husband and I have been in KL two months already and we still don''t have health insurance. Coming from Canada where health insurance is just a given, we are a bit confused about the options here. We''ve seen a package from Aetna which involves choosing from a list of critical illnesses so that we can be covered if one of those things arises, but not for things we don''t choose. Seems like a really weird approach. We are both in our late twenties, we don''t smoke, we seldom drink, we always wear our seatbelts. In general we are pretty healthy. We''re thinking of starting a family while we are here, so coverage of pregnancy check-ups and childbirth is on our minds. Can anyone steer us in the right direction re: health insurance? It all seems far too confusing! Thanks! Jen "

Try finding health insurance on the web. There are quite a few options that should fit your needs.

" For a list of health insurances go to the website TM Health Yellow Pages. The websites are often very general (give address/phone) and do not give much detailed information. I am also still looking for a reasonable health insurance in Malaysia, but since I am 59 my situation is a bit different from Jen. In my case you have to be insured before you are 60, but with 65 they kick you out. I have worldwide cover by a Swiss insurance, but that one is not cheap. I think another option, and that is what I am going to do, is to contact a local hospital and some doctors to find out, with which health insurance they have the best experience.Hope this might give Jen some clues. " Hi, Jen et al Sorry not to have come into this sooner, I''ve been very busy lately. My firm supplies health insurance to international schools (we cover ISKL, for instance, and New Delhi and Dhaka and and and) and international companies. We have a version available for individuals. Pricing is based on your selection of deductible ($0 per policy year up to $5000 per policy year) and copayment (10%, 20%, or 30%, but ONLY against treatment in the US or Canada and ONLY against the first $10,000 of treatment costs.) As a young couple your rates would be fairly low. Cover is highly inclusive, particularly compared to Aetna''s supermarket approach. We underwrite existing conditions -- that is, the insurance firm decides on a case by case basis whether to just accept your problem, charge a bit extra, limit the claims to a max of $X, or exclude it for a given period of time. If you don''t have any health problems, this doesn''t arise. We cover pregnancy costs after 10 months, so you can''t be pregnant at the time cover begins. Once covered, though, your prenatal care is insured. More importantly, unlike most other firms we cover the baby from the very moment of birth, not 15 or 30 or even 45 days after. More, any baby with a medical problem is NOT treated as pre-existing, another major shortcoming with most policies. It''s not perfect -- what is, in this life? -- but it''s world class. Email me or phone my secretary at 03-2146-9029 if you''d like more information. Best regards, Lance ""Barbarism is needed every four or five hundred years to bring the world back to life. Otherwise it would die of civilization."" - Edmond and Jules de Goncourt "

" Jen, I guess now three months since yr posting you''ve sorted out the health insurance, but if not the firs thing I would ask is why (as expats) your husband/SO''s company isn''t covering both of you. This is the most common benefit provided by all but the very smallest of companies, and I would urge him to take this up with them. If you need help on schemes, feel free to call me on 03-7722-4272.
