" Hi Shauna, I understand how you feel. I had a tough time meeting people too when I first came to Malaysia 18 years ago from England. Have you heard of the AWA (American Womens Association)?. Its a great place to meet people who are expats like you and to make new friends. There is a similar association for British women. Sorry I don''t have the KL addresses to give you now (only the Penang ones - where I am living) but will find out for you - mail me. "

" Hi, Shauna You should join the AAM, the American Association of Malaysia. We take all nationalities despite the name. There are a lot of regular and special activities and a splendid monthly magazine. I know it''s splendid because I write the financial column therein! Let me know if you have difficulty finding them, and I''ll have them get in touch with you by email. Lance ""Art is the lie that makes us realize the truth."" - Pablo Picasso "

" Hi Shauna. I''m Canadian, too, and must admit joining the American Association is the furthest thing from my mind. There is also a Canadian Association and Canadian Women''s Association. I don''t think they are as active as the American Association, but also probably not as expensive. I haven''t joined either, but I believe you can get info at the Canadian High Commission (on Jalan Ampang, across from the Nikko Hotel). There is also Ibu family resource group - basically for anybody with kids, from any country. I''ve been here almost five months and must admit I''m starting to feel isolated, too. We just moved out to Tropicana, which makes it hard to get out as the taxis don''t come by this way much, and we only have one car. *sigh* So I know how you feel. Feel free to email me, just make sure to put something about expat exchange in the subject line (I mostly get junk in that account and sometimes get overzealous deleting things!). Good luck! "

" The American Association of Malaysia is different. You can find them at 15 Jalan WIckham off Jalan Ampang Hilir, 55000 KL, tel 03-4251-9610. Tell ''em I sent you. As of this writing, Friday 8 July, we''re having a TGIF get-together at Moussandra''s lower level at the KL Plaza from 1800 on. Lance "

" Hi Shauna! This is my first peek at this forum since I came back from Austria 5 months back. You''ve probably made some friends by now but do feel free to write to me. I''m available and just round a few corners from you in PJ(I live near the International Islamic University (IUI) Matriculation Centre). Believe me, I know how it''s like dealing with the lack of transport in KL/PJ. Been there, done that and am doing it once again. Sigh... I was a (t)railing(!) spouse for 2 years and it was not always easy. Take care, CC PS: The sync swimmers did well! "

does your organization have any branches in the capital city of Johar? This is for a young American planning to move there. mshiekman@aol.com

Sorry to be the one who breaks this to you.
JOhor is not three hours away. Try five hours.
