I would like to hear from Americans or Brits who have retired in Malaysia. I plan on moving there in the next two years, and would appreciate info on housing, and finances. Can a person live comfortably there on say, 5000RM per month ($1350.00 usd)?

Not in KL.

If you go to somewhere like penang you can get a small 1300 sq ft codo for about RM1500 furnished, run a small car Kanchil for say RM 1000 per mnth including buying it.

You must remember average Malaysian earns about RM 1000 to RM 3000 per mnth.

My wife (a Malaysian national) and I are hoping to 'escape' the dire political situation in Australia to teach and live in Kuching, Sarawak. I've noticed that, you, Mr Sabah live in that same state and was wondering if you could give any advice regarding any recent changes to medical insurance/ job prospects/ unit prices/ average rental prices, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

We are an authourized sponsor for Malaysia My Second Home program appointed by The Immigration Department of Malaysia.

We can sponsor you under this program where you will get an indefinite visa to live in Malaysia plus car tax incentive.

Dear Teoh, I have received some enquiries about buying properties in Malaysia to qualify for the Malaysia My Second HOme program. As far as I know, you only need to put up a fixed deposit of RM100,000 or RM150,000 to get this seond home visa. Can you just buy any property about RM250,000 and qualify for the MMSH visa as well or do you have to buy only properties under the sponsorhip of Malaysian developers registered as sponsors under this program. I'm a bit confused. Please enlightened me. Thanks.

buying property in Malaysia is a completely separate issue from the M2H visa - just put your 100,000 [or income] data in to Immigration along with the other paperwork to get the visa, then you can either rent, stay in a hotel or buy property - it is entirely your own choice what to do.

Remember though, you should get formal approval from the FIC [Foreign Investment Commisison] but this is quite fast and although you are told not to sell for three years, it can be relaxed if you really need to leave the country permanently

We try to advise expats, with emphasis on East Malaysia, so if we can be of help, please check out our web site
