I am initiating research re. employment in Malaysia, and welcome advice/suggestions from other expats & professionals there.
As a communications and P.R. person with substantial experience in travel & culture writing, international media and special events & stakeholder relations, I also volunteer. Fundraising, community relations and english teaching (ESL) make up my non-profit experience profile. I have lived and worked as an expat in various countries including Hong Kong and England.
I have vacationed in Malaysia, and I am interested in returning. Currently, I am researching volunteer and employment opportunities there. Any relevant advice is most welcome. with thanks.

if you just want to volunteer, come and do it, but be prepared to go out to Singapore or somewhere every three months to renew your visa. We live here and my 28 year old daughter tried to volunteer, but was not able to get a long term visa.
If you want to work, then your skills must be something that Malaysians cannot do - unless you find a hotel or similar international company that has an expat quota.

Donald Sabah,
Thank you for your prompt and informative reply. Much appreciated, and extremely helpful. Sorry for my delayed response: I was expecting an e-mail notification from this website for all new posts - but did not. Found your reply only by checking the site today.
Your information is most helpful. Ultimately, I hope to find employment, but prefer to begin with volunteer work which I am also more than willing to continue should I find other employment later.
I am quite familiar with both Singaore and Malaysia - but it has been a couple of years since I last travelled to both countries. If possible, will you please advise the volunteer organisations with which you are familiar, including contact details? I assume ESL is still required in some agrarian et al places?
Many thanks, Enya Sharen - Canada

actually, I live in Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia, where the principles are the same, but my actual contacts would only be valuable if you came to Sabah, as opposed to West Malaysia.
regards, Donald
