Malaysia shows up very well in most categories on NOMBEA but has a very high crime rate.
What are the components of crime there and how does it affect the quality of life? Robbery across the board and corruption seem to be the greatest concerns.
Can anyone explain if crime is found throughout or in particular locations.
I guess corruption will affect everyone

Hi Ynot, In my opinion crime is not an issue at all in Malaysia. I live here now for more than 20 years and feel very safe. You can walk the streets of Penang by day and night without any fear. Maybe ladies should carry their handbag away from the street, because there are some snatch thieves on bikes driving around. If you live in a condo the security is quite strict and I wouldn’t know any cases of burglary. This is a different story with landed property, where you have to make sure the access to it is difficult or impossible. Many times I hear complains of corruption and strange enough the same people tell you later on that they settled their police summon “on the spot”. You could also check http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi-data/ for more info about crime and compare it with your home country and will see that Malaysia is one of the safest countries in the world. Thanks Kebinger. There are many cities in the USA that are right up there with the worst in the world whether is organized or cultural.
In most it is prudent to be careful what ever one is doing and it is worth doing one's home work before venturing out. That is not to say one should walk around in fear. It is not worth that price.

Hi Ynot, I don’t know where you read about the high crime rate of Malaysia. Have a look at http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri-crime-total-crimes and you will see that Malaysia is rated quite well. For sure you can’t compare it with highly populated countries but you can see the overall crime rate is lower than Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Austria. Karl

Thanks Kebinger. Nice to have a comparison. My information came from Numbeo which put a very impressive amount of effort into their reports. http://www.numbeo.com/common/. Pull down Crime and go to the Country Index. Malaysia is way up there at 8th highest which surprised me because Malaysia shows up very well in other respects. You will see that these numbers are developed from personal reports not from government statistics which appears to be the basis of Nationmaster's numbers. One could spend a ton of time delving through these indexes and still not find the answers to security and safety.
