I am an American Citizen and my wife is a Singapore Citizen with an American PR (Green Card).

Having recently retired and having spent considerable time in South East Asia over the years we would like to spend four to six months each year in Penang. Can anybody please advise the best visa for us, and is there a difference in the visa approach between my wife and myself?

Hey there,

Malaysian immigration usually grants travellers a social visit pass at the airport. A typical duration for an American is 3 months and for a Singaporean that would be a month. You could probably do a "visa run" however the authorities would probably be reluctant to grant you a pass after a few "visa runs".

If you are planning to visit Malaysia regularly, you might want to consider a Malaysia My Second Home Visa. The main criteria for this would be to show financial capacity (ie. show that you have an income equivalent to RM10,000/- per month & cash of RM500,000 if you're under 50yrs and RM350,000/- if you're over 50yrs.

On approval you will be required to place a fixed deposit (RM150,000/- if you're over 50 yrs and RM300,000/- if you're under 50 yrs) in a bank in Malaysia for the duration of the visa. The visa is granted typically for 10 yrs.

Hope that helps!

Pardon my confusion, I thought from what I read that the bank deposit for over 50 was less than for under 50....and if you meet minimum monthly income requirements the deposit is greatly decreased or eliminated. Please advise.

hello,

yes, you are correct, the fixed deposit for over 50yrs is RM150,000. For under 50 yrs in RM300,000.

the deposits are never completely eliminated. they can be reduced if you purchase a property over RM1,000,000/- or for other approved withdrawals such as medical etc. For those over 50, you can withdraw as much as RM50,000/- from the RM150,000/- Fixed deposit, leaving a minimum of RM100,000/- for the duration of your visa. Hope that helps! Whats your email? I can send you a summary.
