" Pat, Merida.,Yucatan Founded 1542 Pop. 725,000 rainy season June to September Merida., Yucatan is one of the safest city''s in Mexico. The people are very friendly and my Spanish is limited, I have found many people who are willing to help. The best exchange rate I have received has been at an ATM machine with no fee. One thing you will find is that the Yucatan,Merida. has its one style of food. and very good food. (Recently their have been a number of articles in some of the US food mags, Gourmet, etc. that have featured the food of the Yucatan) I have had a number of good meals at Casa Del Paseo, located in the center of merida # 456 Paseo De Montejo $$ La Tratto located on #479 Paseo De Montejo is an al fresco bistro and bar not as ""up scale"" but a very nice place$$ Xcanatun Casa De Piedra, a restored Hacienda that has first class accomidations $$$ located about 20 min. from Merida. In merida''s central plaza The cathedral of San Ildelfonso the oldest cathedral in Mexico is a nice site to visit Merida''s town hall Placio Municipal houses some grate murals illustrating the history of the Yucatan on Sunday the plaza is filled with venders and a local dance school preforms a cultural dance show that is very nice. If your into history at the end of Paseo De Montejo (Calle 47) the museum of Anthropology and history is nice place to visit. Calle 60 can be a grate place to walk, and see the colonial architecture and window shop. The best Auto rental I have negotiated has been with National car rental (400P for a 4 door VW pointer) the absolute worst was with Localize (750 for 2 door nissan sentry with broken AC) If you need a day or two at the beach the city of Progreso is about 36Km (22Miles). Merida is also a good base to travel from. Dibilchaliun 23km Uxmal 80Km Chichen Itza 120Km I hope this helps. Leon Joyce "
