My wife and I are considering moving to Mexico. We are drawn to the Chapala/Ajijic areas. Does anyone have any advice on employment in these areas? My wife is certified to teach ESL and I've got a Masters in Business. However, I enjoy teaching and am open to teaching ESL as well. If anyone has any advice on these types of jobs in these areas, we would be grateful for your help. Thanks!

I believe the ability to work is limited, to jobs that do not take away from the Mexican people, and you need to get it approved in advance..I'd suggest an immigration lawyer in Mexico, could guide you the best..Or try LCS in Ajijic,it has many resources(Lake Chapala Society)..they do have a web site

I'm considering moving to the same area. One author points out that wages are very low in Mexico, unless a foreign (or American) company hires you in the US and sends you there. Retiring to work in Mexico is rarely possible.

We are originally from Plattsburgh, across the lake from Burlington, and moved to Lake Chapala just over two years ago. We would be glad to answer some of your questions about living here, but do not suggest you plan on working for a living here. Most of us are retired & there are many opportunities to volunteer your services. Drop me a line at [email protected]

I was wondering if you could tell me whether the Casa Tres Leones B & B is as nice as it is advertised on the internet @mexconnect.com?? Also, I assume that if a person wanted to work in the area, just for fun, there probably wouldn't be much available to Americans??

Lilia, you can definitely work in Mexico "just for fun." The need for charity workers is enormous. But as all research points out, very few Americans who migrate to Mexico are allowed to find employment. The average Mexican earns about $200/month, and they need those jobs desperately.

We are planning to move the the Chapala/Ajijic area. I will be retiring, but my wife, who is a Registered Nurse, wants to continue working as a nurse. Do you have any information on clinics, hospitals, Doctor's offices that would need nurses?
Thank you
