Driving to Lake Chapala Part 2

Before we left the Holiday Inn at Saltillo, we showed our map to the desk clerk. The AAA map recommended that we take 54 after we reached Zacateca. However, a brochure from Texas recommended that you take 45 to Aquascalientes, then 40 to Lagos de Moreno, and then 80 to Guadalajara. The desk clerk explained that 54 would be very mountainous and narrow at parts. He said that Hoiday Inn advised their American guests to take the longer route from Zacateca.

We got out of Saltillo by following the signs, and 54 to Zacateca was usually a good road. I was surprised at how easy it was to find the route signs we needed when we were on the freeways and toll roads, but in the big cities, you have to be quick. But if you miss a turn, you simply go back. It also helps to know that when you are travelling 45 through Aquascalientes that the signs will sometimes point to "Mexico" (Mexico City) but that is still the right direction.

At Guadalajara we easily found the signs for Chapala, and so we arrived safe and sound.

When you see the route signs for "Liber," that's a free road. Always take "Couta," the toll road. Remember to get pesos when you first enter Mexico, because many places along the way do not accept dollars.
