1-800 Numbers

Folks, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I am usually unable to dial 800 numbers in the US, despite using different methods. Sometimes I do get through, but usually a Mexican operator interrupts while I'm still dialing to tell me that the nmumber doesn't exist.

How do you dial a 1-800 number in the US from Mexico?

In order to reach an 800 number in the USA, dial 1-880-XXX-XXXX

It will not be a toll free number because you're dialling an international number & you will be billed at International Rates by Telmex.

New member here! Go to a Dr. Simi Farmacia and buy the phone card for 50 pesos. It gets you 30 US minutes under th1 001- dial in and it works on 800 numbers! 001-800 or to your nearest gringo tienda like 7-11 and buy a Sinutel card for 100 pesos. That get you 70 US minutes. BUT on that card, if a machine picks up, the call is immediately dropped. Happy dialing! (I am assuming you have a land line!) The SiguTel card does work via cell phone, but you also pay the minimum air to to access the Mexican 01-800 first.

Where do you live in Mexico? I live in Puerto Valllarta. I have not seen these cards here. Do you know if they are available here in PV? Thanks for the info, I hope I can get the card here. Judy K

As I said, Dr. Similares farmarias have the 50 peso card.
Singutel I got at a Seven Eleven. I live on Isla Mujeres across the bay from Cancun, state of Quintana Roo. You should be able to get the Dr. Simi card at least. He is running for president and the cards to the US are believed to be helpful to him in getting donations from mgrant workers families. He also has a hotline to call in corruption attached to the card. So I think there should be outlets there. And 7-11 in franchise in Mexico, usually to Mexicans.

I know your frustration. I have found an internet phone service called "skype" to be excellent. I have called from Mexico to the US for over an hour for $1. Sign up at www.skype.com. Now if only they provided commissions!

I'm glad to hear about the Similares card. It had never occured to me to check there for a phone card.

Here in central Mexico we have a wonderful phone card available through interrom. It costs about 7 U.S. cents per minute to call the U.S. and Canada. They have excellent rates to Europe, too. You can recharge it with a CC online or by making a deposite into their bank account. They have provided us with hours of clear, cheap talking time. Their website is www.uniphone.net. don't let the low-tech look of the site worry you. We've had great service from them.

If you are technical and have high speed internet try dowloading the Gizmo Project. You can make calls to the U.S. for insanely low prices with them.
