Contemplating a move

I am recently retired and I am considering moving to Mexico as a part year resident. My plan is to come down this winter and do a little searching for an area I will like. I am curious about the best areas with reasonable prices; rent, utilities, availability of public transportation, etc. I spent 22 years in the military and I've lived most of that time outside of the U.S. so I am very adaptable. I have always gotten along with the locals wherever I've lived and I prefer to assimilate. I figure that if I am going to live somewhere I had best get the most out of the experience. My plan, as it stands right now, is to fly to Monterrey this winter and spend a week or so and then move on to other areas, getting a feel for each place I visit to see if we are a match. I would appreciate it greatly if some of you could suggest cities that I might visit that would offer me the most bang for the buck. I am not a big partier but I do enjoy a drink from time to time and a good restaurant. I would like to visit areas with a good representation of expats to meet with and question to gain insight from their experiences living in Mexico.

From Monterrey, you might take one of the local flights or a bus to Guadalajara and spend a few days there; then, drop down to Chapala and Ajijic on Lake Chapala for a while. Other places worth exploring are Guanajuato, Morelia, Patzcuaro, Uruapan, Querétero, San Luis Potosi, Cuernavaca and San Miguel de Allende. While Chapala/Ajijic have lots of expats, the other places have fewer. All have differing climates.

Not sure you want to live in a place where your countrymen are.

Because most of them are trying to re-create the same laws they had in their country. Funny but so true. :-)

The same happens in Spain with Germans or in North Africa with Frenchies.
