Hello to all.My wife and I have been looking at relocating to the Yucatan for the last few years and we have read book after book on the subject. What we really need is to start talking to real people who have made the transition. We have some friends who have built in Costa Rica but it is just different than Mexico and not where we have chosen to move.We would sure like to get to know people on this site and hear what it was really like to make the move, and how the best ways were to do it.We would love hear from any who could give us some realistic advice for making this dream a reality. Thanks Josh and Kristina

Have you spent an entire summer and fall anywhere on the coast, in a rental without expensive air conditioning and at a monthly rent that is affordable? It is the oppressive heat and humidity that usually drive those from cooler climates to head for the highlands and only visit the coasts for winter vacations. We have some favorite places on the coasts too, but only for a week in the winter. The rest of the year, somewhere at 5000' above sea level, or more, is much more habitable.

Hello Josh and Kristina! My husband and I moved here with our children from Canada about 7 1/2 years ago. We live in Playa del Carmen. You can contact me through my site if you have specific questions.

... and yes, the whole Yucatan Peninsula gets hot and humid in the summer but I like it!

So how would you say jobs and housing are right now? I mean is it possible to find a source of income with out to much dificulty and what are the median prices of housing in the Tulum and Playa areas. How much income is really needed. I have heard that it is still hard to really own property in these areas is this still the case? Does anyone have some reliable people they could direct us to that could help us find real estate. We have heard so many different prices that depened on the type of house and the area but we really have no solid connection there that we are confident in when it comes to giving the whole story.Any help would be great. My wife has just had a bone marrow transplant and that is one of the reasons we are so ready to follow our dreams and move. In October of 08 Kristina was diagnosed with Luekemia and in January she had bone marrow transplant and is now is in remision. We are hoping that she will be able to travel in the next six months, and we plan to go and investigate a few different areas and look at housing when she can travel. We want to build a good solid base of rescources before we go so we have some idea of what to be looking for. We have just had a hard time finding a rescource for housing and work.We want to semi retire and we still have our house and property here in the states. We are by no means rich but want the quality of life that we feel when we are in mexico. And after all we have gone through we have realized after all is said and done you only live once so you might as well live the life you want

No one should plan to support themselves by working in Mexico; it is even difficult for Mexican citizens who have the right to work. Foreigners don't have that right without jumping through a lot of hoops and having some talent or skill that can't be filled by a citizen. Formal working permission must be obtained from immigration and added to your visa with the support and assistance of your employer; so you have to have something special, including being bilingual. To get the visa in the first place, you will have to prove independent resources/income from outside of Mexico and do that each year at renewal time. I know this sounds harsh, but Mexico does try to protect its own. In coastal or border areas, you must buy property through a bank trust; unlike inland, where you can get a normal deed.

Well first regarding the work situation for a foreigner in Mexico - RVGringo is 100% right. You do have to jump through a lot of hoops and it is not easy. If you can arrange an income to be produced in your country before you come or develop an internet business that would be best. Some people also live here part time - they don't work here but they work in their home country when they return.

The trust needed in coastal areas in not a problem. We have our house a several properties in a trust and I actually feel it is more protection for us as foreign buyers. For prices and more details on this I would suggest you contact my husband Shawn at our Real Estate office www.Onestopmc.com.

So that may give you as start. Keep us posted!
