My husband and I are considering retiring in Mexico. Does anyone have a suggestion or preference of any of these cities? If you do can you say why. We are applying for our residency visa. Does anyone know of a web site where we apartments are more economical? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

First congratulations on retiring and on moving to Mexico..many thousands of Americans are making MX their home...As you can see by my login.we are half yr residents of Cozumel..LOVE It..so that 1 vote for our area..but also see a lot of value and huge ex-pat community in Merida...a online free magazine that may assist you is Yucatanliving.com..American publication by husband & wife that moved about 12+ yrs ago I think from Seattle area..it is the go to guide for everything Yucatan. Saying that I would say what personally appeals to you is what you need to consider 1st..If its value along with amenities I would point you to Merida..If you want a Las Vegas more expensive location than Cancun or Playa..not a fan of either place, its a circus over there..Cozumel is stunning beautiful, peaceful and quiet, huge draw for scuba & snorkling..downtown is busy on cruise days (3 days) during high season, simple solution to that don't go downtown during those days, ships come in by 9AM and leave around 4PM or so..Merida is an amazing city with many amenities, great hospitals/medical care, shopping and history..about 40 minutes to beach.. On Yucatanliving.com there are several real estate sites listed..as in the US..tell them your budget amount and lots of options..Good luck to you and feel free to ask any questions, will help if I can..

Congrats on having the spirit to retire to Mexico. We purchased a condo last year just outside of Merida after visiting PDC for 6 years (AI holidays). We did love the Mayan Rivera but the prices were prohibitive for us! We loved the area around Merida - the beach is wonderful & the ex-pats that we have met (both online & in person are wonderful). I would suggest taking a look online at YoListo for the best information(http://www.yolisto.com/forum/1-yolisto-site-news-and-updates/) or join Mexico Amigos! on Facebook - a terrific site and ohso friendly. As for renting an apartment - I can't say which is the most economical but I would stay away from Progreso Vacation Rentals as they can be very unreliable. Ask on either website and you can get tons of information. I am obviously very partial to the area around Merida/Progreso/Telchac/Chelem but once you look around you will see why! We find the area very affordable but this will be our first LONG vacation down there (3 months) so either of the websites I mentioned have folks that have been there for years and they can tell you much better than I can! To me the choice is easy - Merida! Good Luck & contact me personally via e-mail if you want more info. Adios!

Can't take any issue with the other posts, I am currently in Yucatan looking for a place to call home. In the past month or so I have been to Merida, Chelem, Progreso, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and am currently in Puerto Morelos. Problem is that where ever I am is were I want to be!
One thing that I did learn is not to pay to much attention to the stuff that is posted on websites. Thanks to the Merida English Library and their Monday evening meetings to allow Spanish speakers to chat with English speaker I met a beautiful lady that has been helping me learn the ropes and Spainish too. When I showed her the houses that I was looking at on the web she was dumbfounded, we went and got a local paper and it looks like I will save 33% or more on a rental just by having her help me avoid the "Gringo Tax".
If you let me know what kind of price range, priorities and amenities you are looking for I might be able to help you more.

Without that info I would suggest you get leave your stuff in the US, get a 1 month rental in Centro Merida and visit the other places you mentioned, crazy different vibes in all of them, kinda like asking where would I like to live- NYC, Vegas, West Palm Beach or the Outer Banks.
