Spices and other common foods

I will be moving to the Chapala area next year and am wondering if I can get certain American/Canadian spices like dill, terragon, basil, etc. in Mexico? A better question might be: what can't I get in common spices and foods in Mexico?

Mexico is BIG on using Spices, You can find all sorts of spices in and near the Central Market in downtown Chapala.

You will need to be able to explain what you want in Spanish or take someone with you.

Surper Lake Grocery in Sam Antonio, Tla has a large selection of commercially packaged spices,

Even WalMart has a large selection again in San Antonio, Tla. Never looked for a spice I could not find here.

You are in luck. I have found turmeric, Chinese 5-spice, and even obscure Lebanese 7-spice at Casa Gourmet on the Carretera in Ajijic (other side of the Carretera from Walmart). This is where I go when the grocery stores let me down. The more common spices like dill, basil, etc. are at Soriano, Costco and Walmart. Breathe!

Thank you very much. I had never seen dill in Mexico and I love dill so I can breath....

Try the "granary" store next to Gossips on the carterra in Ajijic for spices. You'll save a ton of $$$ compared to the other suggestions listed here. At the "granary" store, they sell by weight and their minimum for spices is 9 pesos per item. It's a great store. Besides spices you'll find everything from Greek yoghurt to psyllium husk, to virgin coconut oil to Splenda (sold not in envelopes but in unpackaged bulk). The very lovely young woman who runs the store (whose name I've unfortunately forgotten) will also order rare or unusual spices for you. She is very accommodating.

Regarding fresh spices: It can be challenging to get fresh dill (although dry dill is available). For some reason dill doesn't grow well here, nor does fennel. I've found that a good substitute for the taste of fennel in some recipes is to add some Chinchon (a widely available Mexican liquor similar to Pernod).

Most other fresh herbs can be grown at home and can be purchased at viveros (garden nurseries) in town. Good fresh cilantro and parsley are super-common at virtually any place that sells vegetables.
