Making New Friends in San Miguel de Allende, MX

Now that I have decided to make this move from the States and settle in San Miguel de Allende, new fears are beginning to surface. What if I can't find friends and acquaintances once I get there? Just the thought of being alone in a new city gives me case to think. I have searched the web, asked questions on how to go about this and short of "go to the local bars and talk to people", I haven't had much luck. So, I can't even give an educated guess or advice on how to go about this or even if there are ways, I wouldn't know. If anyone has any ideas, I would sure appreciate it. I'd feel a lot better knowing I would arrive there with even a basic support system. First ex-pat experience gitters, I guess.

I am in the same boat, planning to leave this year....finding all kinds of excuses for myself not to go. But, I really think they are just last minute jitters like getting married. All of us are somewhat afraid of the unknown. Personally I think you just have to take the plunge. I am confident enough that there will be lots of expats to become friends with, and nationals as well, especially in the large centers and well known areas. Its not a forever deal if you don't like. You can always go back home. Be brave.

Hello and I completely understand how you feel. Expat gitters are the norm everytime you move. I am planning my move from Spain to Guanajuato and I got the gitters bad :). I don't have an answer exactly but I know that by going out and joining some of the expat activities, there are list serves that are groups you can connect with like GTOlist. And then you just start going and doing things. And doing they 'hey would you like to get a coffee sometime?' kind of line. It is hard and I am no expert despite many different expat experiences. Each one is different and new. SMA seems full of things to do and be involved with. I will be in Guanajuato but let me know if you would like to be friends. I am a single woman. Good luck!

Perhaps a two week visit would be in order. Just to see if you even like the town.

It can be daunting to be single in any strange city ~ especially one where a different language is an issue! Have you read any blogs from other expats who live in San Miguel? Or googled organizations in San Miguel that you would like to join such as dog rescue, musical groups, athletic events, etc. Or perhaps google single groups in San Miguel? We have always gone to church in each place we have moved to & met some wonderful people. Think of all the things you love to do, & see if there are groups there of like interest. Good Luck!

Thanks Sandee for your kind words. Your referral to a marriage is great! And the fact that the move is not final does leave room for change if needed. My email is [email protected] keep me in mind when you make your move. Good luck to you too.

Thank you for your reply Ruby, and for the good advice. I probably haven't done the right searches. Wow, you have lived in many places. Yes, I would like to be friends. My email is [email protected] I will be in SMA for a month Feb-Mar to locate lodgings and check out the situation. Then I will return to the States to tie up loose ends for a couple of weeks before returning. Write me back and don't forget me!

Hi Joaquin, thanks for you suggestion, I will be in SMA for about a month Feb-Mar first. My original intention was to just make the move, but it does make sense to go first, find a place, etc. As it is, I have no deadlines other than to be finally settled and start work. Your kindness is much appreciated. My email is [email protected].

Thank you Conamor for your reply, I will follow up on your great suggestions. I know my concerns seem silly but I have always been a well organized individual and always plan ahead. Living in the States we take so much for granted that a move like this is in fact daunting. My house right now is in an uproar, trying to decide what I am taking with me and what's going into storage. I've decided on one rolling duffel, one backpack and one messenger bag. That's it! Very exciting to feel unencumbered and free. My email is [email protected] please keep in touch if you come to SMA. Good luck to you!

I live in San Miguel and making friends here is so easy... Many many expat groups, Go sit in the Library... take a Spanish class....just sit in the Jardin and people watch... next thing you know you will be having lunch with someone... You don't say if you are a man or a woman does not really matter .. but as a single woman this place is the best for finding friends... Don't worry about it... Really.. I have been here 9 years...

Thank you for replying Vlynn. I too am a single woman. I am finding maybe it won't be as difficult as I thought. I have had great responses from very nice people. Nine years is a long time. I wish I would have decided nine years ago. My email is [email protected]. Keep in touch with me, I'd like to take you to lunch. I will be in SMA definitely in March. Thanks again for the valuable info!
