I have sent my inquiry to the nearest Mexican consulate in Canada regarding a question that has come up about my vehicle needing to be manufactured in a NAFTA zone. I am awaiting my answer. BUT, my initial research tells me this would only apply if I were importing the vehicle, which I do not believe I am required to do on a Temporary Visa. Any thoughts on this based on personal experience would be appreciated. Better yet, has anyone take a NISSAN X-Trail into Mexico while holding a Temporary Visa.

You're OK! You only have to import the vehicle permanently if you have a Residente Permanente. Then the vehicle will have to be a NAFTA vehicle.

More importantly with a Temporal. Four years of Temporal and they don't care what you drive

Thanks everyone for your replies, huge help. My rep at the consulate has a full mailbox so I'm guessing he's very busy and I won't hear from him for awhile.

Mexican generally do not answer telephone nor email inquires. Face to face is what is preferred.

Apparently not. I've had several calls with Gonzalo at the consulate. Face to face is not an option as they are 1300 km's away and is the nearest consulate. I was just making note that he seems busy these days.

Be assured that you can bring ANY vehicle into Mexico under a temporary visa or visitors permit. You can bring in an RV, boat, motorcycle..any vehicle and of any value. You arrive at the border and paperwork will be processed and you will get a sticker for the windshield. For more information on driving in Mexico, who can drive your car in Mexico...go to http://www.tiocorpinsurance.com/index.cfm/driving-in-mexico/ By the way, do not buy your insurance at the border...the cost is exorbitant for exactly the same coverage...or cheaper but for poor coverage.

When you say temp visa, do you mean temp resident visa or the 180 day tourist visa? You will not need to import your vehicle using a tourist visa. However, you will need a temporary permit to go along with your tourist visa if you are going to the mainland of Mexico. Baja California and Baja Sur don't require the vehicle permit. The permit is only good for 180 days, just like the tourist visa. If your using a temporary resident visa you will need to import it through a customs broker. Mexico has changed the requirements for importation of vehicles since the PRI has taken over and it has caused protest for various political and economic reasons. There is a good article on the bajainsider website regarding this very issue and I just read it several days ago. You may want to read the article too. Also, vehicles with a J in the vin number can not be imported.

Residencia Temporal doesn't need an permanent import of a vehicle but needs a temp import just like those with a Visitante/180 day visa. Residencia Permanente requires permanent import of a vehicle.

Teflonman, your info seems like it's not current. Importing has been put on hold on Temp Res Visas. Has that changed in the last few weeks?

You are correct number 13, they are currently on hold. The article I read, on Baja Insider, stated that it was due to the protests of the new rules. It went on to predict that the rules will most likely go back to what they were before PRI took over.
