Suggest hugging the gulf coast. I drove from Colorado to Playa del Carmen in 2003. Great trip. Good food, lodgings and scenery. Plan on going to major towns. Get through Monterrey in daylight hours. You will find that after Monterrey not a lot of English is spoken. My wife had a Spanish phrase book and prepped while on the road. The locals in some cases seemed to take offense that we did not speak Spanish.

Advise. Stay on the toll roads (quotas) when possible. Stay off of isolated and little traveled roads.

If you have a auto GPS it will help keep you on track. Garmin has a micro SD chip with all of the Mexico information. It will guide you to lodgings and tell you how close the nearest Pemex is.

Do not drive at night

We got hit by an opportunistic cop in Villahermosa. $20 US. Did not like the town.

Actually keep a good attitude and you should really enjoy the drive. If you have any questions you can send me a private message.

Depends. Horse back is about two months. I have used the Groupo Senda bus. You can also drive it. Don't drive at night. Cross at the main bridge in Laredo early morning. Stay on the toll roads. Do not let your gas tank go below I/2.

Laredo to Chapala is a good route...BUT... the better crossing is Columbia Bridge just NW of Laredo. No traffic...just the immigration & customs office at the bridge. You need a Texas Tag (road toll) sticker to drive the route to the bridge. Stay in San Antonio previous nite...up early...cross at Columbia...stop half way to Chapala...you arrive Chapala by 4pm or so.
Buy insurance online before you go...Too Expensive at the border for the same coverage.

Wouldn't it be just as easy to stay in Laredo and take 69W to the bridge?
