My wife and I are looking at retiring in Mexico and would like to know if anyone can give us their views on the best way to proceed. We are not looking to own property. Are there any groups or organizations that we can contact to guide us.

Another forum I've found somewhat useful is playa.info.com. We're having a home built in the El Cielo gated community just north of Playa Del Carmen but there are many options for rentals right in town and you'll find recommendations for long-term rentals through local property management companies there.

Thanks for the suggestion playa.info.com. I have been searching for an expat forum I and could not find one for Playa Del Carmen. My husband and I are also moving to El Cielo!

The Mexico Guru and International Living sites have short quizzes that you can take to give you ideas about where to retire. And I'm sure there are others out there. Of course these quizzes aren't definitive, but they should give you some idea of the things that you need to consider when you're deciding where to retire in Mexico as well as your options.

I highly recommend renting for 1 or 2 yrs, different locations. Analyze yourself, people-person, loner, water lover, inland/mountains etc..Mexico has it all, one of the reasons droves of retirees are coming here..Will u become a full time retiree here or go back and forth? We are back & forth, half in Cozumel/half in IL. We bought in 2001 pre retirement, we bought in a condo, 32 units on the ocean, clear pros/cons to condo living, but the biggest PRO, is walk out the door and leave. Security is an issue, Cozumel is mostly crimes of convenience, we feel very safe here, but the sinking peso has been a disaster for the Mexican people, imagine losing 60% of your $$ and buying power.. Good luck in your search and enjoy your retirement.

We've found our place and look forward to our life there. We looked at oceanfront condos and villas throughout the Carib and many spots were attractive to us. But this spot on the RM really appeals to us, not just the beaches and water sports, but the people and vibe, and the ability of traveling to other areas (by car or CUN). But yes do try different places (not just Mexico) to see what fits you.

Riviera Maya, and Cancun airport...
So many areas you can drive or bus to in Mexico And the rest of the Carib we love (as well as much of the US) is so much more accessible via CUN as compared to our regional airport in upstate NY. One of the reasons we chose Playa over PV which we also like visiting.

Hello Bluewater!
My husband and I have been looking at this El Cielo as well!
If you don't mind I would love to hear how the experience has been going with building?
I would love to hear what the cost per square foot is at, or an approximation! Did you buy the plot of land first and then have an architect draw it up, or are you building within the El Cielo format that they have available?
We have been debating between a condo or building, and I really like the idea of having my own space!
Also, how long does it take to get into Playa from there? Is it possible to ride a bike or do you have to have a car?
Sorry for all the questions!!! Congratulations by the way! It must be an exciting time!
I look forward to hearing from you! Melissa

Two really good blogs put out by ex-pats are cozumel4u.com and Yucatanliving.com. Yucatanliving is based in Merida, biggest ex-pat community around here. Merida is a big city with all the advantages of big cities, Costco, Sam's and malls, but also surrounded by small towns and beach towns..Happy Hunting, give Cozumel a look see, that's our slice of retirement heaven.

Yes PDC, www.playa.info, thx. Not as useful a resource as we hoped but there is some limited info there. Best bet is to just google the location and search topics you are interested in.
