Good day all I am looking to retire from the Canadian Forces in the next couple years and moving to either Belize or Mexico with my partner. I would love any input with dos and don’ts as well were would be a good spot to live for a good price for two of us on one pension. Not certain if we should rent awhile before maybe doing a purchase. As well an area with nice people expats shopping and steps from the beach is a must. We want to enjoy hearing the beach in the morning and its where we spend our time during the day so a nice beach is really key.
We love Playa Del Carman and have been a few times now. I hear allot about Belize as of late as well.
Thoughts and any help would be great.

My wife and I have spent a lot of time in Mexico. We moved to Puerto Vallarta 21 months ago. We have spent much time on the Caribbean at Playa. We seriously considered Playa and visited there 6 months before deciding on PV. The Caribbean has an entirely different culture than here in PV. It also gets much hotter there. It is flat.
Here in PV we have mountains, a beautiful jungle and very warm local people. It is also very safe. A large ExPat community with many Canadians. Consider taking a look at PV. We are renting. The rent is reasonable. We would never buy. If you change your mind it is easy to move. No need to sell. Take some time to experience possible locations before you choose. Move in haste---repent in leisure!

Your first step is to be sure that you qualify for residence visas. Apply at the nearest Mexican consulate.

Do your research then try living wherever you choose for at least six months, prepared to move if you have to. SO many places are great to visit but suck living there. Thailand worked for me nine years, but now the political situation is getting uncomfortable to the point I'm moving to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. I'm moving as little "stuff" as possible so if it doesn't work for me, I can easily pull up stakes and move elsewhere.
