¿Alguien vive en Campeche? ¿Lo que te gusta y no te gusta de Campeche?
I´ve read some about it (tourist books, history, blogs etc) and will read more. I plan on visiting, but was hoping for some opinions and information from someone actually living there now (or recently)
So far my favorite city in Mexíco is Guanajuato, which is surprising since I have rarely lived far from an ocean. I like the colorful homes, hills, winding streets, European feel, balconies, alleys, winding roads, rooftops, views and the art. I like that it is a walkable city. Unfortunately, I think it is too cold for me to live there, though I definitely will visit and who knows... The colonial cities in Mexíco are beautiful.
I've been familiarizing myself with the Mexican states and right now I'm reading about cities in the Yucatán. What I dislike about the coastal cities so far is the tourism, resorts and the many apartments and luxury condos. I would like to live in a small house. I also don't care to ever see a Walmart, big box store or a strong American influence and presence, though having access to Home Depot and such can be quite helpful at times. I just don't want that part of my every day life.
I am tracking the weather of a number of Mexican cities on my phone. I do realize it is winter... and I have read about the yearly weather for many cities. Weather sites report quite a range in humidity for Campeche. Is it really unbearable? Does one walk around soaking wet because of the humidity? Does it damage everything?
I like the Caribbean feel of the east coast of Mexico. Campeche has a beautiful malecón and the city seems quite walkable and much easier to get around on bike than hilly Guanajuato. I haven't seen any homes similar to those in Guanajuato with the enclosed garden area, rooftop and multiple levels, but perhaps they are there. How is the medical care?
Any input would be appreciated. Gracias.
This is a really great forum. I've enjoyed reading many of the posts and really appreciate the help offered.

I live in Merida and the weather is comparable here to there. From November to April the weather is 85 degrees, sometimes lower, occasionally higher but May through September are killer months. The humidity and heat are horrible. Most people who live in this part of the country, if foreigners, escape back to their native countries for those month. You can always get an air conditioned apartment and cool it out for half a year, but venturing out at midday is at 100-110 degrees F with 70% plus humidity. If you want to beat the heat, you can always live inland but keep in mind you will be far removed from the expat community. That means unless you speak Spanish or maya, you're cooked with no social contact. Yes, it will be cooler in the hills. Some people have opted for San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It is at a higher elevation so it is cooler but considering you want the heat, it will be too cool for you.

I am just beginning my search for moving to Mexico from Denver. I lived in Morelos and Chiapas for a while about a decade ago but have not had the opportunity to return. Now I am a mother of two young boys and long for them to in a land rich in culture and safe from all of the gun violence we have experienced here. In reading you're post, it sounds like my search is very similar to what your are looking for, and I wonder if your ever moved, and if so, where? What has been your experience? Thanks so much!

We have plans on moving to The Yucatan on the Gulf just North of Merida. Check it out. The city of Campeche appears not to have an expat presence that I could see. If you don't speak Spanish then probably not for you. Nice metro area and you are right the Malecon is beautiful. Most who don't live on the Gulf or Oceans will tell you the weather is too hot there in the summer. We come from the desert in Oregon and 100's and above are not uncommon. We can deal with it and do. Folks tend to lay low in the mid afternoon when it is that hot. My first trip to Chelem and Chuburna led me to think no one lived there......we went in the mid day. Once it cooled down some they appeared. The humidity is something you get used to, but you have to want to. No place on this earth is perfect. Pick one that suits you the most that you can afford and make it happen. That is our plan.
