Post New Topic

My family and I just made the jump from US to Caye Caulker, Belize in Jan. 2016. We love Caye Caulker but considering Tulum for our next move in 2017 as our next adventure. Was curious what the best way to find long term rentals? What is the average cost of rentals in the area?

Why Tulum? Have you been there?

Honestly we just heard good things about it and going to visit. We are open to anywhere that saves costs compared to where we are now. Do you have any suggestions?

Tulum and caye Caulke might not be what you would like.

In Mx Yucatan - Campeche, Merida, then in Quintana Roo south of Tulum, the city of Chetumal, neqr th bord of Belize. I lown a property on the Bahia, safe and tranquil area and yet minutes drive to the city. No poullution. My property is for sale just in case.

The nearer border is Chetumal. In Mxi. The border from Mexico to Belize., Corozal.

I have travelled from the US to Mx many times before obtaining my permanent residency, and have had sometimes a 30 day visa only, for no apparent reason. So the 185 days, yes but be always aware that one office might think different.

Please share your opinion of Caye Caulker! My wife and I are considering it but have not visited yet. How long were you there? Did you ever consider buying there? Was it easy to fit into society there as a foreigner? What are your thoughts regarding cost of living there?

Tx in advance!

Caye Caulker is tiny, only for tourists and very crowded. If you like the party life .... it may be for you.

Belize is low on my list of destinations

Would recommend visiting CC to see if you like it. It is a great place to visit, and I would think a great place to live if it's what you are looking for.
Belize is a gorgeous destination!

I might be able to offer some help. (Long time lurker). Our family considered the move to Tulum, and we visited and stayed for an extended period. It's a very laid back, yoga-ish type town. Tons of backpackers and such. There are a lot of expats living there. It's lush and the water is fantastic. But there are problems.

We decided against Tulum because of two things: the utilities are spotty the closer you get to the beach, and reliable internet service is hard to get (at least it was in 2014).

Most of the beaches in the main "strip" are monopolized by private hotels that will not allow you to access the beaches, or try to chase you away if you are not a hotel guest.

We ended up liking Playa Del Carmen a lot more and I wish we had explored it more than we did Tulum. We just heard so many great things about Tulum and then when we actually got there it was a bit of a let-down. I also wish we had tried Cozumel, which also looked extremely promising.

It's relatively cheap to live there, but only if you live away from the beach. While the beaches are lovely, the main town of Tulum is rather dirty.

Hence, there's not a lot of "middle" ground with regards to rentals in Tulum. You will pay thousands to live on the beach, or you can pay a few hundred and live in town, away from the beaches.

But you might love it. I strongly suggest an extended visit to see if it's for you.

Yes agree. We found the lively side of Playa along with the quiet area just outside an ideal spot for us. You can live within walking or biking distance of a gorgeous beach and a short drive into town and excellent restaurants outside of town. Great internet, medical, and shopping not to mention the beauty of the outlying areas. All within an easy drive! We wouldn't want to stay in Playa, but we love being close by so we can enjoy what Playa has to offer.

One of the best ways to get to know an area before making any kind of long-term commitment to it is to house sit.
