Hello! My family and I are moving to Mexico soon. My question is how hard is it to travel with RVs in Mexico? We want to visit many cities in Mexico and we think having our RV could make it easier as in travel and cost. (Less money in hotels more trips in a year) Well at least that is what we are thinking. Has anyone have experience with this? Places we want to visit are basically all over Mexico. We will be living near Mexico City. Also, anyone have info on legal matters of taking RVs into Mexico? Thanks!

I would never imagine living out of an RV and certainly not driving one in Mexico especially if you want to see a lot of different areas and learn about the country. My reasons are multi-fold: one, gas is not cheap here (currently we are paying the equivalent of $3.50 USD per gallon); two, the roads are maintained as well as in the U.S. and if you stay to the better quality roads you'd greatly limit where you could go; three, safety of yourself and your belongings is exposed and even targeted. On the positive side: Travel in very nice buses or plane is cheap and you get to interact with the Mexican people who are wonderful. Staying in hotels for weeks or months at a time is far more affordable than you might expect. You have ample freedom to get around more easily to more places.

tom does not win this one.
My wife and I traveled in a motorhome for almost 4 years, we made the entire US, western Canada and a few parts of Mexico. We traveled as many back roads as possible, stayed in state parks or in the where ever. The where ever was the best. Mexico was the most challenging but we would and may do it again. I suggest the RV not be large, 32 ft. would be max. smaller would be better, good tires and two spares. I am anxious to see if any one else who has done this has any thing to say.

I agree that travelling in Mexico in an RV is do able IF the RV is not too huge. If it is you give the vibe you're a rich American in a country here many people live in lesser dwellings. Under 32 feet is recommended but don't be Suprised if you end up paying lots of bribes just because....

Frankly, I suggest that you drive your car and stay in economical hotels, which abound. You will be much more flexible and it will be more economical. Mexico comes up short on RV parks and is full of dangers for RVs on anything but the autopistas; low limbs & other height and width problems, narrower lanes, tight traffic, truck rules applied, and such. You can stay in nice hotels for about $40 USD per night, or even less if you negotiate for a longer stay. Good food is always nearby in Mexico.
