I am an expat currently living in Belize and will soon start scouting in Mexico for possible relocation in a few months. I like to be near the water, but, I am especially interested in Social opportunities other than a bar. I am an active single female retiree. Anybody familiar with activities in Bacalar? Is it like a city or just water spots? Thank you.

Bacalar is in Quintana Roo. I have heard that the 7 lagoon area is quite beautiful. I think it is about an hour from Chetumal. I am looking for an expat community. Thanks for replying.

Many such places are wonderful to visit in their comfortable season, but not really the best places to settle down and live. You have probably discovered that fact in Belize.

I am looking into Bacalar for a move as well. I spent many years in Belize, but it has just become too dicey on a number of fronts. Would really appreciate hearing from ex-pats who have made the move: insight, counsel, perspective. I am planning on being there sometime on the next 60 days, prior to a check-out trip to Ecuador and Colombia. If you are going as well, let's link up. Considering driving down from Cancun (want to see area south of Tulum) but could also go into Chetumal. Thanks in advance....

Hi, My husband and I are living on Caye Caulker and are moving as well to Mexico. We are going to Ajijic (lake Chapala). But we are leaving Feb. 28 or we would consider driving with you to Cancun. We are leaving sooner than you

Ten years in .Chetumal where I own a water front home. A safe city and areas. No mass tourism. Check the .chetumal connection group on facebook and other expat groups for Yucatan, Cancun, Playa del Carmen

I have visited Bacalar many times. It is a quiet coastal town with less emphasis on beach life. I think social opportunities would be considerably less than the other well known tourist destinations in the northern part of Quintana Roo. It is a beautiful place, but out of the mainstream.

The area around Bacalar is a day sailors paradise. A big freshwater lake and maybe a half hour trailer to salt water. A big plus if you like the small sailboats.

Thanks for this, mate. The small sailboat thing is intriguing. I assume the saltwater you are talking about is Chetumal Bay? I've spent time in Corozal, but found the fishing thin the bay. Any input? Is there much of an expat group in Bacalar?

You might find Bacalar expats by searching Facebook. That seems to be the platform of choice for many expat groups now.

I tried searching on Facebook, and no expat groups for Bacalar come up. If anyone knows of such a group (Facebook, Yahoo or anywhere), or of a publication that covers Bacalar (online or otherwise), please share that info. Thank you.
