Would anybody please tell me how much, more or less, will I need to live in Queretaro. Let's say Juriquilla or Milenio iii? I am budgeting for about Us$ 800 for rent but what about utilities and food for 2 people.
Any answers will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

My wife and I also plan to move to Queretaro this year. We will visit there later this month and try to find a rental home. $800 should be more than enough unless you want to rent a large home (4 or 5 BR). Our budget is $600 a month.

We lived in Mexico about 5 years ago and will go back again. The exchange rate wasn't great in 2011 as it is today. I am not sure if this helps you or not. Here is our budget list (USD).

Rent: $600
Groceries: $300
Utilities (Elec, Gas & Water): $85
Internet: $35
Cell Phone (2 lines w/AT&T Mexico): $65

Anyway, we will attend a cooking school in Queretaro and budget $3,000 a month. $3,000 is a lot of money in Mexico. If we cannot live well with that amount, we must be crazy. That is what my wife told me.

Intelligent men always listen to their wives:-)
I think you are going to do very well in Queretaro.
There are some small villages around there too, much cheaper to live if you speak Spanish. and yet close enough for a 100 peso taxi ride into town.

DonMax, thank you for your reply. I just read it. Very good info. Good luck to you and your wife. It"s funny I also told my husband that if we could not live on $3000 a month something was very wrong with us.
Thank you again.

We are currently visiting Queretaro and have already found a few things here.

We just found our future home n Juriquilla with 3 BR & 3 Bath in the gated community for 11,500 pesos. There are many rentals available in Juriquilla which is a relatively more expensive area. We had to put 3 mo worth of deposit because we have no relative to guarantee our contract terms.

We also stopped by a local AT&T Mexico store. There are many plans from 199 pesos to 999 pesos a month. We signed up for Plan 499 (499 pesos a month) including unlimited calls and SMSs (Mexico, USA & Canada) and 4GB + 2 GB (Promotion).

DonMax: I just received the latest issue of International Living and there is an article on Mexican colonial cities. They paint Queretaro as a sprawling very unattractive city, with exception of the Centro Historico. Since you are there, can you please give me your personal view and opinion of the city?
Thank you for your time.

Check out Guanajuato, MX, we live in Cozumel, last winter took a trip to Guanajuato & San Miguel Allende, loved both, but hands down Guanajuato is a stunner, you think you are in Italy, wonderful city, inexpensive, lovely city, universities, amazing city..SMA also beautiful, more expensive, huge Hollywood/Business crowd there..If we wanted to leave our ocean front home in Cozumel, Guanajuato would be our choice.

In regards to your question on sprawl in QRO. The city has really grown in the last 20 years and there are new "Master Planned Communities" surrounding the city. The centro historico is really nice. If you want quaint colonial...QRO has it. If you want US style shopping, neighborhoods, & schools...QRO has that also. If you are looking only for Colonial...maybe San Miguel or Guanajuato is more your style. One of the selling points for us is the great schools in QRO and they have an international airport with connections to Houston and Dallas.
Good luck!

Thanks for the post. We plan on moving down next summer to QRO and our thoughts on our budget are similar. We explored the area in a trip last summer and really liked it. We are looking at the Juriquilla area due to the good schools and abundant housing. Best Wishes!

Mexiscott: Just wondering how your plans to relocate to Queretaro in the summer are coming along. My husband and I plan to leave in July, will probably take a week driving from Florida..
Best of luck and we would love to meet you once your family and ours make it there.
Best regards.

MexiScott: Great to hear from you. Funny, we are going exactly thru the same issues you are. BTW, are you shipping your household goods? We find that there are more options for rentals in Juriquilla for "unfurnished" as opposed to furnished places so we are planning to have our belongings shipped. Getting a reasonable shipping company: not an easy task!
I wish you the best and let's keep in touch so we can meet and go for a beer or two...or three...very well deserved, I say.
Best regards,

Ines
