Seeking sage advice: After spending the 90's in Belize, and running political campaigns in the US since, we are ready to do the Mexico move. We know the area around Tulum and Ascension Bay, but not south. That area seems to have a lot of what we like, but some of you know it-unvarnished perspective pls.
Being close to the water and having access to fishing is important, as is a low key community that with time and work we can fit into. Not interested in a highly developed tourist area. (Mahahual seems very interesting, but I was stunned to there is a cruise ship terminal there-or as I refer t them, "floating feed troughs.") Very interested longer term in developing a B/B or small hotel operation, similar to what we had in Placencia back in the day. Would initially rent, of course, with a long-term eye to buy.
Spanish is very limited, but we have found that once you are in that culture for awhile (with some effort), it comes. We are veteran travelers, but reaching the professional and practical age where we'd like to find a place to settle.
So, with sincere thanks in advance, very interested in your input and experience. Cheers

Punta Allen is quiet and sounds like what you would be interested in, Contact Nikki Allen owner of the b&b that has been very long in the area, She helped me 10 years ago as I was helping update a travel guide of the area her place is http://www.shardon.com/

We chose Chetumal and built a water front home nearby the Oxtankah Maya Ruins. No mass tourism, safe, water clean, no polution. 30 minutes drive to the border of Belize. 15 minutes drive to Belize water taxi departing dock in Chetumal. The city is clean and we do not see beggars or homeless. Nice restaurants and stores, one mall, one new strip mall capital with nice shops. We have the best of both worlds. Neighbors comment that we might be in the safest plade in the world, which I agree after a life or work and living around the world. I swim in the Bahia when the sun shines, with my dogs. Of course there no sansy beach but having the Bahia in my back yard is fantastic. Owning property in this area, is safer than on the coast when strong storms happen, which is rare but still nice to feel the house is protected. The are is developing slowy. Not knows yet by the world. Best regards

Wanted to bump this thread as we will driving down the coast in about three weeks. Particularly interested in the Punta Allen to Malahual areas, and Bacalar. Looking for a place to retire with fly fishing options, and real estate that could lend itself to developing as B&B or small hotel/restaurant. Greatly appreciative of counsel from those there or who have been. Can one drive from Malahual to Xcalak, and is that an area we should check out? Cheers.

Taking two weeks commencing 4/18 to explore Bacalar, Mahahual, Xcalak and points in between. This trip is exploratory, to find a landing place for us here we might be able to establish a hotel/restaurant or B&B-and to fly fish that part of the Yucatan.
Counsel and suggestions actively solicited. Initially staying at Xul-Ha Coco for the Bacalar leg. Love to link up with expats in these areas if you are up for cerveza.
