I think several people have mentioned on other threads that they are exploring the idea of or planning on moving to the Lake Chapala area, as I am. I thought it might be fun or useful to compare notes.
I am Elisabeth and have started investigating this with my husband. I have a lot of mainly short term overseas experience, though I lived in Tunisia for 2 years while in the Peace Corps. We'll reach full SS age next year, and will need to live carefully for 5 years or so, then should have more $. And I am tired of the political paralysis and nastiness that seems to me to have taken over in the last 15 years. George likes the quiet life and I need to be involved in civic life, so Lakeside seems like a good option for us. We are planning our first trip down for late June - early July, for only 10 days. Then we'll see; if things seem right, I would want to apply for TR visas next summer (we will qualify financially) and look for something to rent. We would live there full time

Hello!! I'd like to follow along with your adventure because I too have been thinking of the Lake Chapala area. I was wondering, I know that the Mexican government has some restrictions for how much income a resident has to live on. Has this been a problem for anyone?

Hello!! I'd like to follow along with your adventure because I too have been thinking of the Lake Chapala area. Has any had an experience with the government about how much their income is? I would be living on my ss income, which is why I'm looking to retire south of the border.

I'd like to respond but the forum won't let me. It keeps saying "Invalid CFML construct found on line 50 at column 32."
What does that mean?

In response to the repetitive question, the financial requirements are pretty low. If you have enough to live on in Mexico (without work) you probably meet the financial requirements.

katwilo best thing to do is an internet search for income requirement temporary visa mexico. Various Mexican consulate pages should turn up in English with the requirements. Best to check with the consulate you will apply to as they seem to actually require different levels of income.

Hello, we are also investigating the Chapala area. We are taking our first trip down there in early April. If we decide to make the move, we would like to do it in the next several months. There is so much to learn about the area in the interim and we are excited about all the possibilities.

Will keep everyone posted on our visit/move. Is anyone finding any issues of concern. Ours is having a small dog in an area with so many poisonous spiders, scorpions an snakes. A couple of blogs mentioned they are everywhere. It sounds like humans for the most part just get to a clinic quickly. However with an animal, you may not even know they were bitten or may not be able to get to a vet quickly enough.

Are you on facebook, if so there are many groups, Gringos Ajijic, Beg Barter Buy & Sell - Chapala, and Lake Chapala Rentals. They are full of information and ways to meet people. Enjoy your visit to our paradise and I hope you will agree.

Marge; No need to worry much about spiders or scorpions. Our dogs dealt with them just fine, killing them as soon as they detected them. Neither insect is aggressive, so you just need to be careful to keep an eye open for them, use the common barriers, etc. and enjoy your life. In over 13 years, I think I saw fewer than half a dozen scorpions (killed them) and one black widow living in my mailbox (evicted her). Never got stung, never worried much about it either. We and our three dogs & one cat did just fine.

R GRINGO That is the best news i'very heard. It was honestly a deal breaker if anywhere I walked our dog, there was risk. So happy to hear this because we are almost certain we will be joining all of you in the upcoming months....now we just need to find a rental. Thanks again!!!
