Does anyone bank with USAA?

I see Schwab mentioned often as a relatively expat-friendly bank, but it seems to me that USAA has been mentioned a few times. My husband and I are USAA members, though we don't bank with them (yet), and Schwab houses my IRA. So I would like to hear from anyone who wants to share their experience with USAA. Thanks!

I have been a USAA member since 1959 and lived in Mexico for over 13 years. We used no other bank & did everything online or with a phone call. Cash was obtained from ATMs, credit cards seldom used as Mexico is still primarily a cash society. We did keep a Laredo, TX mail forwarding service as our mailing address, plus our Chapala residence as our physical address.

I'm not in Mexico yet, but am planning a move. I've checked into Schwab International. Per their website, $25,000 is required to open the account. This may/may not be a problem. This is just an FYI.

It is a good plan to establish your USA banking well before you make your move outside of the country, as establishing new accounts from abroad may not be possible.

Hi RVGRINGO,
I saw your post in the Expat Forum that you never obtained a Mex Bank account. I also bank with USAA but was wondering if we should get a Schwab Account due to not charging for foreign transaction fees for ATM withdrawals. How bad does USAA hit you for ATM withdrawal fees in Mexico?

Schwab High Yield is my main checkingredients account. They are great, great. I would look into the and transition all your processes (direct deposit, monthly payments) very soon.
I have been saved many times by Charles Schwab checking as it can be used at any ATM in the world. So wherever we are, we go to the ATM that is more secure and better laid out for entering PIN. Also at Home Depot in Guadalajara we made a larger purchase than planned and in was able to walk over and get more cash instead of hunting down a specific bank.
You will find few opportunities to use credit cards and will pay more when you do..

Mexiscott;
Give USAA a call, as it may differ depending upon your accounts & debit cards. When it was Mastercard, it was 1%. Now, I am not certain, but not nore than that, if anything at all. USAA recently changed to Visa, as you probably know, and several “flavors“ are available.
