I'm not an expat yet but planning. I am going on a scouting trip to the Riviera Maya with my dog. Anyone know where you can take a dog to the beach in Playa del Carmen or anywhere on the way south to Lake Bacalar?

Unfortunately There are no Dog friendly beaches in the Riviera Maya by law, there are places where this law is not heavily enforced. Tulum is a good place to take your dog.
There are some pet friendly hotels in Tulum beach, the beaches along Sian Kaan reserve are beautiful and great for dogs.

To anyone researching the Mayan Riviera area (or thinking about moving to Mexico at all), I'd like to recommend a super-popular blog about just those subjects: It's called TwoExpats and it is www.qroo.us. (TwoExpats has over 8,000 followers on Facebook, not sure how many subscribe to the blog.)

And full disclosure: Paul, the blog owner/author wrote this great review of my business: http://qroo.us/2017/01/09/great-housepet-sitting-site-just-for-mexico/

Thanks topmexico!
We will be spending a week in PDC and a week in Bacalar. Any other dog friendly activities that you know of, dog parks, hikes etc in or closer to either of these towns? I will try Sian Kaan on the way to Bacalar for sure!

Mexicans do not usually travel with pets, and many find it strange that others may do so. Dogs must always be on leash and under full control. They are prohibited by law in restaurants and other businesses do not appreciate foreigners bringing them. So, it is best to leave your pet at home when going out to shop or eat. Note that some areas have “street dogs“ which can be very territorial & may attack strange dogs, so be aware when walking your dog. We had three, but they never left our property and lived long and happy lives. Some, who did take their dogs out, or allowed them to escape, have had them die of poisoning; which can also happen to dogs that bark too much or are considered aggressive by neighbors.

@RVGringo, Hi, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya in general is very different than the rest of Mexico, we have over 30 dog friendly restaurants, dog parks, and a very large community of dog lovers, many rescue centers.
Playa Animal rescue, The snoopi Project, Tierra de Animales, Coco´s, etc... We sometimes joke about how many dogs here have a better life than us locals =)
This video was shot this morning, check out the peaceful dog https://www.facebook.com/Diegomanfrediperez/videos/vb.759849889/10155053920979890/?type=2&theater
