My husband and I are planning to move to Playa Del Carmen next year. My question: Are there cheaper towns nearby with good beaches and lower prices?

I live in PDC and most, if not all, coastal towns in the region will be more expensive in which to live. Rental prices, food, if you stay away from the Tourist Traps, cant be beaten. If you live a little inland off the coast, it's even less expensive. Living more inland anywhere along The Riviera Maya will be less expensive, of course. I live on the cost but outside of The City Center a bit and my rent is 450/mos for a very nice 1 bdrm apt. Furnished and equipped.

As far as obtaining a Visa, I went to my local Clerk of Courts with all my information. Driver's License, SS Card, Birth Certificate et al. They took my photo there for 10.00, I filled out an application and they sent it to my house within two (2) weeks. Very easy...

Oh yes, I forgot. I paid for it at that visit also. I think 135.00...that is required.

You may want to do much more research on more Playa-specific sites like www.playa.info. Just doing your own research on Playa, Puerto Morelos, Akamul, Puerto Aventuras, and Tulum will give a good feel for this section of the Riviera Maya.
Playa has become a very busy town and we just built a home just to the north of Playa because we wanted access to great restaurants as well as services and shopping. Other areas will give you a different experience.

There are many developments outside of Playa like Maya Kobá, to the north or on the other west side of the highway like Valle Bambú where the price difference can vary in as much as 100k for the same size property. We have a tour that can help you see all the different options, you can take the express version in one day and have access to a lot of research material to help you in your search. this is the link to the live it experience it and buy it tour from top mexico real estate.
