Oaxaco

Hi all -
My wife, 18 year old son and I have an opportunity to stay in Oaxaco over the summer (well, June through October) and I have a few quick questions.

Taxi vs car rental? We would be staying about 20-30 minutes from the central plaza, and anticipate weekly trips into town for groceries, etc as well as some day trips to the coast and some sightseeing type stuff. Is renting a car a thing there? Is there a robust taxi community or local bus transit system?

From the states to there. We have an RV and if we really wanted to, could groove from anywhere along the US border on down. Is that a thing or are we just asking to be on the news? Or, if an RV is just a bad-idea magnet, would simply driving a car be an option? Thoughts? Dirty Remarks, go for it.

Anything funky we would need to know before coming? Things like it rains 16 inches per day in July, the snakes will not only kill you, but will enjoy doing so, stuff like that?

Any insight is appreciated -

As is true any time people need area-specific information, it's best to post questions to people who live there. One such group is Clandestine Oaxaca Appreciation Society, a strangely named group, but nonetheless, full of reasonably normal (LOL) people who live in Oaxaca: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=clandestine%20oaxaca%20appreciation%20society

Good luck to you!

I was there for a week in 2013. Cabs are very inexpensive. I don't even like to drive in American cities I don't know. The zocalo was very nice and interesting I found a subway shop there. People were kind and helpful. But you really need to know as much Spanish as you can.
